As the Summer League draws to a close (with the last matches next week) here are the details, that Tonka has sent through to me for the End of Summer Season Event. ANYONE that has played for the Tigers or Sharks this year are welcome to come along. Please can you give me or Andy an indication of whether you will be attending or not at the matches next week.....
Thanks
Sara
Friday 30th July 2010.
The Double Gloucester pub, on Cheltenham Road in Longlevens. (we have hired their lounge to ourselves)
7.30pm til midnight.
We will have a disco set up, but because of the change of plans we are no longer able to sort out food, sorry. Hopefully this will not put people off what will be a very sociable and fun night.
In addition to it being a social event, there will be awards for league winners, top scorer, MVP, and the Fair Play award to be given out to winners.
Please forward this email to anyone who you think might like to attend. If it is looking like you are going to win your league, please try and get someone there to collect the trophy at least.
We would love to see as many people there as possible, so bring partners, friends etc and make it a great end to what I think has been a successful league this summer.
If you know you plan on being there as a team, please let me know. If possible an estimate on numbers might be useful for me, so I can let the pub know if they will need to staff the bar well.
Looking forward to seeing you all for a natter, and hoping that we have people who would be willing to take advantage of the disco and break out a few moves lol.
Cheers. Tonka.

Julie Stowe , Ann-Marie Randle and Karen Fynn from the Ladies 1XI playing for the Invitiational XI (renamed Algeria!) vs England over 40s on Sunday 20th July at Cannock. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=230747&id=749028272&l=19d14ded26
It was a gorgeous day, but we only had 11 players and played 90mins which made it pretty tough going. We lost 3-1, but the goals came in the last 30 when we were struggling without the subs and they were still rotating on fresh players. Hopefully it gave the Vets a good enough go to prepare them well for the Vets Hockey World Cup in Nottingham in July, where they'll take on some other great hockey nations.
Thanks to Dinesh Patel, Amanda Ferebee, Rachel Porter & Sylvia Pawsey for supporting us & Sara Jane Thompson who tried, but got stuck in traffic on the M6! x

Doug Nicholls (Gloucestershire Hockey Association) is running some summer hockey playing sessions this summer (for any club). It is not coaching - playing small-sided games just for fun!
Doug is stressing that it is NOT a county event and has NO bearing on county selection.
The sessions run from Sunday 20th June to Sunday 29th August (excl. Sunday 11th July) at Oxtalls Tennis Centre Gloucester (also known as Plock Court).
The cost is £15 for the ten sessions or £2 per session (he would prefer the single payment!).
There is a 4pm-5pm session aimed at current U13 (roughly current yr6 and yr7), and a 5pm-6pm session for the older ones.
If you would like to take part, reply to Doug at gha_u14@yahoo.co.uk stating which session you would like to attend.
Bring at least 2 different coloured shirts and plenty to drink!

Lansdown travelled to Lydney, safe in the knowledge that they had already secured second place in the league and thus automatic promotion to the Severn Division. Lydney have struggled this season, but have secured some high-scoring wins, so the 11 men of Lansdown were taking nothing for granted in this final match of the season.
They started strongly, using the width well and creating a number of early scoring chances. Inside 15 minutes, a strong run from Tony Moule down the right wing saw him cut into the 'D' and unleash a powerful reverse stick sweep which the Lydney 'keeper was unable to save. The goal spurred Lansdown further and they soon added a second when Brian Dunlea forced home a rebound. Lydney were being stretched hard and were limited to occasional counter-attacks, which were easily dealt with by a strong Lansdown defence of Vickery, Saunders, Holdaway and Williams. When the Lydney attack did break the defence, debutant goalie Graham Hill was on hand to snuff out the challenge. At the other end, the pacey Lansdown forwards were giving Lydney a torrid time and it wasn't long before Dave Holdaway added their third, breaking into the 'D' at pace and firing a powerful shot into the top corner of the goal, leaving the Lydney keeper routed to the spot.
Half-time gave both sides a well-earned break and a chance to re-group, but the second half began just as the first, with Lansdown pressing very hard. They quickly increased their lead through Tony Moule, before he quickly added his third and Lansdown's fifth with another crisp finish. Brian Dunlea was not to be outdone and he bagged his second with another close-range effort. Another cross from inside-right fell to Anil Patel who fired home Lansdown's seventh. With ten minutes to go, Lydney broke quickly and finally breached the Lansdown goal with a smartly taken finish, giving them some reward for their efforts. But even then Lansdown were not finished and it was left to Dunlea to complete his own hat-trick, to round off a fine victory and an excellent performance by a delighted Lansdown team.

A great effort today by a young side 6 of our players eligible to play next year! We started strongly against eventual winners Wotton, but conceded two well taken goals which gave Matt no chance. They had one very skilful player whom we found difficult to contain. Sam P, Dillon & Will linked well and created some good attacking opportunities but we were unable to find a finish. Despite the loss the next game was a cracker with great praise to the boys for a battling performance to come from behind to win. We really took the game to Bristol & West with Sam P driving towards goal, on every opportunity & with Will, Dillon & Hugo linking well, we looked the better side, forcing several short corners. Unfortunately we were caught out on the counter attack as our defenders pushed up too far allowing unmarked players behind to leave one on ones against Matt, for both their goals. Sam Privett equalised first with a powerful shot and Dillon equalised second with a superb reverse stick shot from the edge of the D. The winner was another good strike from Sam following a strong run beating several players. Our third group game against Cheltenham, whose confidence was up having just scored 10, saw more battling play and despite the scoreline, a 3-0 defeat, much better defending. Cameron cleared our lines well with some powerful hits and Joe & Christy marked & tackled strongly. Matt made several excellent saves and was only undone by great strikes in the corners. Our 5/6th play off v Gloucester was an exciting finale with a great second half fight back which saw us narrowly fail to snatch a draw despite our best team play of the day. Will & Sam Tilley clicked going forward and Sam swept the ball past the keeper for a well taken goal following a good run & pass from Will. Will scored himself with a great run & shot in the far corner & just failed to repeat this in the final minutes with the ball just missing the far post. Joe, Christy & Hugo also played their best hockey of the day to make it a really good finish to the tournament despite the loss. It was great to see how much our players have improved this season and in all our matches today we gave the opposition a really tough match – Well done boys and thanks for representing the Club so well!
Team -Matt Holdaway, Sam Privett, Sam Tilley, Will Tucker, Cameron Cox, Joe Hughes, Christy Rutland, Hugo Hansen & Dillon Clarke.

Girls U13 Tournament – Sunday 28 February
Squad: Emma Charlesworth, Laura Field, Megan Hooper, Izzy Paterson, Thea Griffiths, Scarlett Kearney, Sophie Collyer, April Symes, Holly Shaw.
The team started their afternoon against Cirencester 1 playing some great hockey and scored an early goal from a very narrow angle just inside the D. The game was almost in the bag, but in the final minute a corner was awarded against us and a well taken shot from the top of the circle ended up in the back of our net, giving us a 1-1 draw. Next we met Yate and put the pressure on again. There was some great team work throughout the game which was rewarded with a goal from Scarlett, giving us a 1-0 win. Our next two games were against Chelt Coyotes and East Glos 1. In both games the girls worked hard, but were starting to look tired and lost a little focus. Both teams managed to get attacking players through our defence regularly giving our new goalkeeper Emma a lot of work to do. Both games ended 2-0, but the scoreline could have been higher without the many fantastic saves from Emma. Going into the last game against Chelt 1 it was time to dig deep, be positive and put the other games behind us. This is exactly what the squad did, with all nine players rotating and working really well for each other. Unfortunately, in the closing minutes of the game Cheltenham scored and although Lansdown got awarded a corner right on time they could not convert it to give them the draw.
All girls worked hard with Scarlett doing a great job up front, supported by Megan, with April working tirelessly in midfield with Holly, Sophie and Izzy, Laura dominating in defence putting in some strong and crucial tackles, supported by Thea and last, but by no means least our player of the tournament – Emma in goal! Well done girls.
Special thanks to Tristan Murfitt who joined the girls for the afternoon as the team umpire.

The Snape Construction Sponsored Lansdown 1st X1 rounded off the weekend with their second win in as many days.
Lansdown played some of their best hockey of the season in the first twenty minutes. The midfield passed the ball well and the forward trio of Dave Holdaway, Sam Maylott and Ben Snape caused havoc with some incisive running. However, Lansdown did not capitalise on this pressure and it was UWIC who registered first when they fired a short corner through the legs of Rich Perry’s who was unsighted.
Lansdown quickly regained their composure and continued to press hard. Rob Mudge continued his fine run of form in front of goal, firing his second of the weekend home from the top of the circle. The goal was especially good as he first had to control a lofted ball on his reverse stick.
The second half was more frenetic. Lansdown enjoyed the majority of pressure but both teams had some decent chances. Ben Snape will feel a little unlucky not to have registered on a couple of occasions.
As time passed, Lansdown began to wonder whether this would be another missed opportunity. The pressure final told ten minutes from the end when Andy Buckmaster hit a shot off-balance from the top of the circle into the bottom corner. That was a fine way to finish his season.
The final few minutes were chaotic. Lansdown sat back to defend their lead and UWIC piled forward. Darren Ashenhurst and Lance Worth had to rely on all of their experience to keep UWIC from scoring. Both players made last ditch tackles in the final few minutes.

You'll be pleased to hear that our boys from the Mens 1XI have braved it through wind, rain & sleet to make it to Shrewsbury, which is a third of the way.
Doesn't sounds like they're having too many laughs along the way, especially as they missed their boat and had to cycle and extra 12 miles on the first day. Early nights for all of them and VERY sore bottoms apparently!!
At least they have a nice sunny day today, but they are heading towards the snow up North!
Now that I've pulled the sympathy vote(!!), pop your hand in your pocket, and go to this link to give them some of your hard earned cash. It's all in aid of Sport Relief. http://www.justgiving.com/LansdownJOGLE
At the end of March, five of our first eleven are taking on the end-to-end challenge to support Sport Relief. Andy Buckmaster, Ben Nichols, Jon Thompson, Lance Worth and Ben Snape are riding close to a thousand miles starting at Lands End and finishing twelve days later at John O’Groats.Category: Club News Author: Karen Fynn

The U12 End of Season presentation evening held on Friday 26th March was a great way to celebrate the end of another successful season at Lansdown. All those playing in the U12 junior section were invited to attend an evening of fun games and sports activities which included wacky races and football!
There was a great turn out from the players and parents too, who watched the presentation of awards at our Bentham clubhouse. Sally Privett, Club Chairwoman and England Lady Masters Hockey Player was there to give out the awards.
The awards for the U8s and U10s were really tough this year as there has been some great play and commitment from those playing in tournaments to those at training. The first awards on the night went to the following players. . .

Injuries and unavailability meant a number of personnel changes for this fixture against a youthful and well-drilled Ross team. Ross had much the better of the early exchanges on a very sandy Monmouth pitch. Lansdown struggled with their ball distribution, conceding possession at regular intervals and they were exposed to regular counter-attacks from the Ross midfield. The defense were working overtime to keep the Ross forwards at bay and strong tackling from Dave Jones and Tim Postlethwaite prevented a number of scoring opportunities. At the other end, the Lansdown forward line of Pete Holdaway and Chris Hooper worked hard to carve their own openings. It was Holdaway who finally broke the deadlock, driving home a loose ball from close range to send Lansdown into the break with a 1-0 advantage.
Ross began the second half with their continued physical approach and eventually the pressure told as a forward forced the ball home to level the match. Lansdown rallied and worked hard to nullify the Ross threat, whilst creating a number of chances for themselves. During one such attack, Lansdown forced the Ross ‘keeper to make a reflex save, the ball rebounding onto a defender’s foot. Lansdown smashed home the loose ball, but the umpire awarded a short-corner. The ensuing set-piece appeared to break down, but Dave Holdaway picked up the ball and drove wide across the D, shooting hard and low as he did so. The ‘keeper made another save, but the ball rebounded to Pete Holdaway who slapped the ball into a defender on the line. After consultation, the umpire awarded a penalty stroke, which Ian Matthews duly converted to give Lansdown the lead once more.
The fast running of the Ross forwards was a constant threat, but Lansdown appeared to be holding them at bay. With 5 minutes to go, Lansdown were running the clock down by keeping possession in the opposing 23 and they appeared to have closed out the game when a defender kicked the ball. As Lansdown stopped, the umpire ignored the offense and Ross broke quickly down the left wing. An early cross found a Ross midfielder in the D, who raced wide and reverse-sticked his shot under Phil Sidey and into the goal for a last minute equalizer. It was a cruel blow after a battling performance from the Lansdown side, who felt that they had dropped 2 points.

Girls U12 Club Championship – Sunday 28 March
This was the final tournament of the season’s calendar for our girls. Unfortunately, some of the regular players were unavailable, however we had 7 willing and enthusiastic girls, including Kelsi our new player who was experiencing her first tournament for Lansdown.
The first match of the afternoon was against Lydney, who were the final winners of the tournament. This was a really tough game which we lost 8-0. The second match was against Cheltenham Coyotes. The girls worked really hard in this game but were playing against an older side, and we were struggling to put good passes together. Elisha was injured just after half time, but with no reserves stayed on and tried to defend the continual attacks from Cheltenham. However, we were heading in the right direction losing this game only 4-0. Hungry for a goal we went into the final game in our group against Cirencester. The girls started to put better passes together, defended well and Ellen put in some fantastic saves. Then with great cheers from the supporters we scored our first goal – well done Kelsi! The final score was 3-1. This put us in 4th place in our group so we then played Stroud who were 4th in the other group. The Lansdown girls were tired but by half time were winning 1-0. They dominated the second half with Elisha and Ellie P doing a great job in defence. Kelsi and Izzy battled hard in midfield winning many tackles and putting some great passes through to the attack. Madie and Ellie L put some lovely shots on target and we were rewarded with another 2 goals in the second half. Final score was 3-0 (Madie -1, Ellie L – 2). A super way to end the day, giving the girls 7th place overall. Everyone received a certificate for taking part, but I think it was the sweets that the girls enjoyed the most!
Squad: Elisha Privett (Captain), Ellie Pearson, Kelsi Lewis, Madie Jenkins, Ellie Lyburn, Izzy Montgomery, Ellen Symington (GK).
Thanks to Tristan Murfitt who was our umpire for the afternoon .

The final summary………
So the curtain has fallen for the final time on the Lansdown Lions season, 26 matches played some won, some lost and a lot drawn. What a rollercoaster ride we have had my friends, the giddy highs when stuffing Stroud and the demonstrable lows being spanked by Wotton. At least we can say we tried.
But is trying enough I ask.
Well in this case, no.
What we want, need, desire is the one thing we cannot have. MORE. The season is too short we were only just starting to get going a la super tankers, long time to speed up but once going the bow wave of yellow and black was to be inexorable.
How do you summarise the season, I will go with three words. Educational, shaping and enjoyable
Educational, we learnt about each other and what we can do, some can do lots and will do great things. Others, not so much, at least the worst player on the team knows who he is and is happy with being the most attractive male in the club, well at least his mum thinks so, shame his wife does not!, Sidey back off.
Shaping, younglings gained experience that will be invaluable for their coming years, not just in hockey. The talks, that a certain member of the team gave, will stand them in good stead for life, or at least keep them out of jail.
Enjoyable, this biographer has played all types of sports for the last 25 years and I have found this team has that rare quality, they realise in the end it is only a silly game and we are here to have fun. Trust me all you others, play because you want to have a laugh, it does not matter if you get relegated or miss promotion, you will try again in 6 months, it does not matter if an umpire makes a bad call, you will get one going your way next week. I played rugby at a pretty high level and forgot to enjoy it, thus I stopped, lesson learnt.
Enjoy the limited time you have, just 1 hour 10 minutes every 168 hours, it is not much is it. Especially as this weekend marks the point that you have 4032 hours until next season. The Lions do this cheeky banter thing before every game, fun, frolics and festivities during and straight back to banter after. Nice.
So the results.

Ladies and gentlemen I bid you farewell, remember this though.
The Lansdown world is a better place with people like Mr Phillip Sidey, our MIA Captain, without this stalwart of the club, the Lions would not exist and you lot would not play, I bet he has umpired for you all, so thank him and all the others that make this club work, otherwise they will stop and you lot will be playing for Cheltenham. You have been warned
à bientôt mon amis et rester à l'école
Niall
P.S. We again gave Stroud one hell of a game to finish the season, (Stroud B, yeah right you guys were recognised that did not belong), we actually felt sorry for them, so let them draw 3 a piece.
A pity draw, at first good idea but afterwards, not so good. It was as bad a feeling as selling your ex-girlfriends kitten on eBay, good at first, but you feel a bit guilty when you look back on it.

As the penultimate social event of the season, there will be a Boat Race Night.
The evening will begin in the bar at Bentham with the AGM where captains and other officers are voted in. It is really important to get as many people to this part of the evening. Without enough people to vote officers in (or indeed to stand), the club cannot continue.
Anyway, enough of the serious stuff...! After the AGM is finished, we will on the boat race for anyone wanting to join in. If you don't want to join in with the game, you won't be forced to. You'll have just as much fun watching!
There will be two teams: Lansdown Red and Lansdown Blue. If you're intending to join in with the game, you should wear item(s) of clothing to match the team you want to be on.
A team captain (chooses team in each pub to race) and cox (a loud person to shout loudly during each race!) will be chosen for the evening.
In designated pubs (see below) each team will choose a team of 4/5 to complete a boat race (standing in a row and the 1st 'rower' finishing drink, then the 2nd, etc, until the team have finished). This means not everyone will have to drink quickly in every pub, but encouragement to team members still given. Points will be awarded after each race and the winner is the team with the most points at the end of the evening.
Taxi's and/or lifts will be organised to to get everyone from Bentham to the Norwood after the racing at Bentham has concluded.
The route to be followed (for anyone wishing to join part way through is as follows):
- Bentham
- Norwood
- Exmouth Arms
- Jolly Brewmaster
- Retreat
- O'Neils
- HaHa
- and Subtone? - unless anyone has strong feelings about another location - speak to Mudgee
So that's that. Pleeeeeease, can you give an indication of what you're likely to do as it'll be handy for Mudgee to get an idea of numbers. Either send Mudgee an email fun@lansdownhockey.co.uk or register your interest on the facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=102928119743642&ref=nf

Although the weather was miserable we went out strong and played a good game of hockey. In the first half we scored 4 goals, coming from Chris Tarling, James Farquhar, Sam Privett and Ben Holdaway. Yes - Ben Holdaway our goalkeeper played up front as his younger brother Matt kitted up and filled his footsteps well with some amazing saves. Nearing the end of the second half we let one in due to a well placed short corner from Newent.
We went out just as strong in the second half scoring 2 goals in the form of Charlie Howes and Max Ellis but at the end of the second half we let one in to finish the game 6 -2.
A little bit of fun:
Best skill: Andrew Gaylor
Best short corner strike: Max Ellis
Best work rate: Ben Holdaway, Tristan Murfitt
Best save: Matt Holdaway
Best tackle: Elliot Patterson
Best youngster: Sam Privett

Last week was poor, I admit to my error in just putting a 12 word match report, so today I plan to make up for it, in my own special way.
Picture the scene, Omagh beach, transports piling into the sandy waste land that is Christ College. the first wave of the 1st Battalion, Lansdown's Easy company, stormed the enemies landscape.
Immediately the enemy, Cleevillians, open fire. Strafing the line of yellow and black, still weak with the missing units coming ashore, Private Howes and Private Jockelson, the western front is not that big you lost losers. Cleeve hit us with artillery and mortars, pounding our defences, trying to drive us back into the sea. But we stand fast.
Easy company is a mix of old veterans of previous campaigns Captain Kim, Colonel Hyndman Major Cole but the unit is equally blessed with young blood ready to give all for the just cause Corporal Ganniclift, Sargent Foster-Turner et al. We did find two young privates that seemed to lie about their age so they could go to war Private Cole and Private Murfit, naughty naughty but there is no going back now. Just so the league know they are fine on their age I just make guff up for the fun and giggles so calm down and get on with your lives
So we wade on, the relentless attacks battering but not stopping the Lions of Cheltenham.
But as we clear the water and look like we are going strike ahead the foe wound us, a cheeky move last nicks their first success.
BIG MISTAKE
Easy company decide it is time to hit back and hit back hard. All out attack is ordered, the storm troopers sprint, Jockelson, Howes, Ganniclift, Dudbridge, Murfit, S. Cole and Foster- Turner, tap, twist, turn, tease, tangle, tantalise, titillate, taunt and torment the enemy. Pace and guile tear them apart.
The Cleeve Keeper then commits an atrocity by scything down Dudbridge, cometh the hour cometh the man, Cpl Ganniclift sends a penalty stroke over the line with the pace and direction of an asthmatic blind fat sloth, but heck, a goal is a goal.
Now we are moving, onward more and more, their attacks snuffed out by White, the Coles, Kim and him at the back, his name I forget but damn he is good looking.
Again the Cleeve keeper cheats, same foul same result, the Bangalores have breached the wire, the beach head looks secure.
Half Time, this message has been brought to you by Lawyers 4 you, we will suck the life blood out of anyone for a check, even if you should have looked where you are going, oh the marble floor is wet, of course it is slippy you numpty you do not need a sign to work that one out. Darwin awards 1 You 0
Now I could bore you with the second half but I won't, lets just say this.......
Easy company took a pounding but fought on, all day, we left the field of battle beaten 3 to 2 but we won the war.
Never has a club had a team that only care about the most important things fun, enjoyment and teamwork. Oh freedom from tyranny and justice for all etc is nice too
One match left for the mighty Lions, we aren't part time like the rest of teams. so come on down on Saturday watch your Lions play some good hockey and break some hearts on the way, ladies watch out the men are on the prowl
For the penultimate time

We had a very young team out and were unfortunate to lose 4-1 to the team we beat earlier this season.
Our new young U13 boys played very well and were an important assett to the team holding Gloucester to a scoreless half-time. Gloucester scored first but a good team effort ended in Matt Holdaway scoring a cracking goal on his debut appearance, making the scores level, but we grew tired and conceded 3 goals to end the match 4-1.

Badgers Reports:
Lansdown 1- Cirencester 2 (Sat 23rd Jan)
It was a cold afternoon but the first goal set the fast tempo as a wicked cross by Josh through two Cirencester defenders brought Dan his first goal for badgers. Unfortunately Ben Holdaway could not stop them all and they drew one back for the end of the first half.
After a grilling pep talk form Simon (our coach) we went into the second half, it was stale-mate for most of the second half, our teams were evenly matched with Sam Cole holding the defence and Charlie Howes hanging up front waiting for a break-through. However as the match was during to a close a short lack of concentration brought Cirencester up with 2 goals to 1.
With our heads held high and the final whistle blarring in our ears we headed home, (or to Bentham for some chips) satisfied.
Stroud 1 - Lansdown 7 (Sat 30th Jan)
It was a cold day, with ice surrounding the away pitch, we were all rearing to go and play attacking hockey. The first half can be summed up with one word - Charlie Howes- our goal scorer. He single handedly scored 4 of our first 5 first half goals. The last one being scored by Charlie Pasco Watson in the last minute.
Even 5 goals up there was still room to improve(well that's what Paul and Simon thought), getting his name on the score sheet, Sam Cole came up from defence to score two goals. As our minds were else where and we were celebrating what must be our game we let one in.
Special mentions to Chris Tarling for playing well on the wing and contributing to the win and to Sam Godwin for consistent play.
Lansdown 3 - Cheltenham 3 (Sat 6th Feb)
Saturday marked the friendly annual rivalry between Lansdown and Cheltenham. Charlie Pasco-Watson scored in the first 10 minutes but shortly after Cheltenham drew one back and we were on level playing fields. Closing on the half-way whistle Sam Godwin smacked it in bottom corner from the opposite side of the D - a fantastic strike! (noting later that he had a £5 bet on the match being a win).
We were in front at the start of the second half but being caught in possession with the game at such a high tempo Cheltenham scored 2 goals in the space of 10 minutes to make the score 3-2 to them. The last ten minutes brought on fresh substitutions as more and more people were getting injured. Special thanks to Steph Murfitt who did a cracking first-aid job. It was our determination and fitness which put us the better team in the closing minutes, Charlie Howes beat the keeper..our hearts lept... bang in the goal. YEAH reared the spectators who were fighting the cold and massaging their necks, which were trying to keep up with the speed of the game.
Special mentions to Ben Holdaway who kept us in the game with countless saves and to Andrew Gaylor who despite breaking his collar bone the day before turned up to cheer us along.

Unlike the normal proceedings we went behind by three goals in the opening 15 minutes to a revengeful Lydney side who we hammered earlier in the season. Thanks to fresh legs from Andy and Nick we drew one back with Charlie Howes scoring with precision just before the half-time whistle. We spent most of the second half in their end but nothing came together and our shots didn't work the keeper. Neither did Lydney who only posed a threat on the counter attack to retain the win and finish the match 3-1.
Special mentions to Cameron who played really well despite only playing hockey for a couple of months.

It was a warm evening and perfect weather for hockey, inside the first five minutes we went one up after Charlie Howes tapped it in on the post after a grilling short corner hit from Sam Cole. Wotton grew stronger after conceding so early on and proved quite a match to our strong side leaving it at 1 - 0 going into the second half.
It was dark as the second half grew underway and once again we started the half well, with some fresh legs on in mid field and defence we pushed up the pitch and got our second goal early on. Charlie Pasco Watson picking it up at the top of the D and beating the keeper in style. 15 minutes later and red faces in every position we once again pressured the D and our third goal came again from Charlie Howes who tapped it in on the post from a shot deflected by Max Ellis via a cross by James Farquhar. As if from nowhere Wotton grew in confidence and pushed men forward, putting on a lot more pressure in the last twenty minutes. We conceded 2 goals in the space of a couple of minutes and Wotton were hungry for an equaliser. Thankfully the final whistle blew to mark the end of a tiring successful match.
Special mentions to Jamie Harper for turning up to support despite not being able to play due to a knee injury.

The Snape Construction Sponsored Lansdown 1st X1 finished off the season with a flourish, beating bottom of the league Pembroke County five goals to nil. It took Lansdown a while to get into their stride, but once Jon Thompson opened the scoring it was plain sailing.
Ben Snape had a good game, scoring two goals (the first was a smart diving finish) and Jon Thompson supported him well adding a couple to his season’s tally. Jon Leat scored the most spectacular goal of the game. He managed to hook the ball from in front of his nose whilst at the same time falling over.
Lansdown are disappointed not to be promoted this year, however, we have had a good season, finishing third. Here’s hoping we go one better next year!
By popular request (mainly by Jon) here are the goal scoring charts for the season:
Jon Thompson (13)
Andy Buckmaster (11)
Ben Snape (8)
Ben Nichols (7)
Jon Leat (5)
Ollie Bolwell (5)
Paul Vickers (4)
Dave Holdaway (3)
Rob Mudge (2)
Darren Ashenhurst (1)

Dear all,
A quick reminder that our End of Season Dinner is on Saturday 17th April 2010. We will be returning to Brickhampton Golf Course Complex this year as they did such a stirling job of it last year. I am having a meeting with them on Tuesday 26th Jan (next week) so I will be sorting through all of the details with them and getting the best deal for us.
After this meeting I will be posting all of the details on here, sending out messages on our Facebook group and emailing everyone to let them know so keep your eyes peeled.
Tickets will soon be on sale and it would be fantastic to get a large representation of players for each team there this year. I have some great raffle prizes in the pipeline too.......
Watch this space....

This was Lansdown’s chance to secure second place in Hereford & Gloucester Division 1 and thus guarantee promotion to the Severn Division with a game in hand. They were determined to complete the job on home turf, but it was clear from the outset that the pressure was telling on the Lansdown players.
Nervous in possession, they regularly ran the ball into trouble. Defensively they were never really challenged, but they lacked the spark and incisive play that has seen them in the top section of the division since the start of the season. They moved the ball neatly through defence, but time and time again they gave the ball away with a poor pass and were forced to build again. A dry and bouncy Bournside pitch added to the difficulties and it was 15 minutes before the Lansdown forwards created a decent scoring opportunity, which the Sherborne keeper dealt with easily. Five minutes later a more promising move saw the ball crossed into the ‘D’ from the left and Dave Holdaway was on hand to force the ball into the goal.
The goal should have settled Lansdown, but things didn’t really improve, as attack after attack broke down with poor control or a mis-directed pass. Then, just before half time, Holdaway picked up a loose ball on halfway and found skipper Mark Williams in space on the left flank. Williams raced to the D, drawing the defender and slipping the ball through to Brian Dunlea on the top of the circle. He controlled the ball and shot neatly into the corner of the goal to make it 2-0.
After a half-time talk, Lansdown came out strongly and pressed hard to increase their lead. The Sherborne defence weathered the storm well, but were restricted to hitting long-balls up the patch to relieve the pressure. However, they could not keep out the determined Lansdown attack for long and Lansdown added their third when Dunlea scrambled the ball home from short-range. By now the game was in the bag and more relaxed play ensued, with some good approach work forcing some decent saves from the Sherborne goalie. However, Lansdown were not to be denied on their promotion day and some excellent work down the right wing led to another scoring opportunity for Dunlea, who gratefully rounded off his hat-trick with a fine strike low into the right corner of the goal. Five minutes later the final whistle blew and Lansdown were able to celebrate the victory that they had deserved and the promotion that they had earned. They round off their season with a final league match away at Lydney on Saturday, safe in the knowledge that nothing rides on the result.

Lansdown turned out 2 teams for the last u8/9 mixed festival of the season, both teams put in a great performance and there was some great teamwork and individual skill on display!
The 2 teams were:
1. Caleb Trotman
2. Joe McGrath

The score lines demonstrate some of the great play made by the Lansdown teams, despite it being the first tournament for quite a few of the Lansdown squad. There was some great attacking hockey being played and also some really good defensive work. Neither teams had a substitute but they played on tirelessly and always with enthusiasm.
A special mention should go to Alex Farquar and Jacob Hardy for being the top goal scorers for their teams and also to Jack Milne and Robert Watson who won player of the tournament for their respective teams!
Also to Ollie Harper who in the match against Cheltenham made a fantastic run to seal the victory. He picked up the ball in the defensive D and made a solo run around the Cheltenham midfield and defence, to the opposite end of the pitch to score! Well done Ollie!
Thanks to all the parents for watching and also to James Farquar and Ollie Ganniclift for being great umpires on the day!

Lansdown Ladies 3XI travelled a short distance to take on Gloucester Ladies 4XI on Saturday 6th March at Plock Court. The Lansdown side were keen to take away the full 3 points having felt robbed the last time they faced the Gloucester side, by losing in the closing minutes of the game. The ladies 3XI were determined and started the game strongly. The midfield and forwards worked well together but were not able to convert their early chances.
Gloucester were quick on the break and nearly caught the Lansdown defence out on a number of occasions. However keeper Karen Holdaway made some superb saves but was just inches away from making a save that took Gloucester 1-0 up in the first half.
After an upbeat half time talk Lansdown were even more determined to get the game back. Lansdown elected ‘player of the match’ Liddy Ellis made some particularly good breaks down the right side of the pitch and caused the Gloucester defence some problems. Liddy was finally rewarded with a goal after another break and a clean strike from the top of the D.
Emma Sayce, Michelle Turner, Sara Thompson and Hannah Drew all had further chances to score but could not quite find the target. After a spell in goal the week before Harriet Greenstock made some crucial tackles in defence and had one of her best games of the season.
Both teams had further chances to score with the respective defence keeping the teams at bay. However the final score stood 1-1.

What is the difference between a prostitute and the mighty Lions.
The prostitute gets to play with men.
No game as Sherbourne A have vanished.
I once met someone that believed they had been abducted by aliens, this was a long time ago though, no probes or test, but he did say they were rough and forced him into a small transport pod. The next thing he knew, he woke up and had been rescued by the Police and was being looked after by them in a cell, obviously nowhere else to keep him whilst unconscious.
Lucky guy.
So troops onward four or so matches to go, before we end this years campaign, lets keep scaring the opposition so much they don't turn up, we must be so butch looking or something.
adiós amigos y amigas,

The Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown 1st X1’s title challenge took a serious blow when they narrowly lost to Gwent. Luckily for Lansdown fellow promotion hopefuls, Cardiff University, also dropped three points.
Gwent were first to strike when a long aerial was thrown over Lansdown’s defence to their unmarked forward who hit a firm strike from the top of the circle, leaving keeper, Rich Perry, with little chance. The game continued to be well balanced throughout, with both teams asking questions of the opposition’s defence. Lansdown’s defence, who were missing a couple of regular players coped admirably, with Lance Worth in particular having a splendid game.
Lansdown pulled a goal back through Jon Thompson who was full of strong running and who won plenty of short corners as a result.
After the break, Gwent again took the lead, this time through a well worked short-corner routine. Over the next fifteen minutes the game seemed to drift along without incident. That changed however when Lansdown won a short corner through some good attacking play from Paul Vickers. The resulting short-corner routine broke down but when the ball fell to Jon Thompson he flicked the ball past the diving keeper from ten yards out.
The game looked to be heading for a draw, but Gwent had other ideas. Jon Bickell was extremely unlucky to give away a short-corner, but another well worked routine sealed the victory for the home side.

This match report is dedicated to Dave the backbone of a team that personified the plucky Brit, he tried but failed.
The Lansdown Lions rolled out twice this weekend to battle Ross on Wye and Newent. Two battles against beasts from the west, a tall order but if any team could do it, it certainly wasn't the fourth XI.
We battled, we fought, we toiled, we sprinted, we ran, we jogged, we walked, we crawled, we keeled over. A for effort B- for result.
Results are 3-2 loss to Ross on Wye (top of the league, so not too bad but we nearly had them), The goals for us were scored by Dave and Dave with Dave saving many and Dave showing great spirit in midfield battling hard and distributing well especially finding Dave in the open on a number of occasions. I would like a special mention for the umpires, thank you for being there Dave and Dave fair and balanced a pleasure to work with, where as Dave needs to try harder to be a team man, sorry for that but it had to be said.
So, next day over to Newent school and some looked worse for wear, Dave with sprained ankle, Dave with stiff leg and Dave, Dave and Dave making a welcome appearance for the Lions. Now here a special note that ALL other teams at ALL levels should heed-
The Lions and Newent B were commended by the umpires for playing the game in an excellent manner fair, polite, passionate and looked like they enjoyed themselves, thanks Lansdown Lions you are a credit to your club and thanks Newent for a good game, result is irrelevant (2-1 top of the league, so not too bad but we nearly had them) , special mention to their captain Dave.
So on we go for another double header, and not the enjoyable type, Glos and Wooton. Dave be there on time and I promise not to get carded again, but in my defence, Dave would have scored if I hadn't.
Love and Kisses

The Snape Construction Sponsored Lansdown 1st X1 travelled to Cardiff knowing that they had to beat rivals, Cardiff Uni, in order to keep alive any hope of promotion.
In a closely fought first half, both teams played some decent hockey. Cardiff were undoubtedly easier on the eye, but it was Lansdown’s high tempo approach that created more of the chances. Ben Nichols squandered a fine chance from close range early on and perhaps that proved to be crucial, as it was Cardiff who seized the initiative and took the lead.
Some good work in midfield from Paul Vickers and Pete Edwards ensured that Cardiff did not run away with the game. In fact Lansdown made plenty of chances from open play but continued to be frustrated by Cardiff’s solid defence.
However, just before half time, Jon Thompson, who was returning from injury, drew Lansdown level when he thumped home a short corner from the top of the circle.
The second half was an intense affair and as a result the quality of the hockey slipped. Neither side was able to create any clear cut chances nor hold on to possession for long. It was no surprise that the next goal came from a short corner; Rich Perry who was carrying an injury was beaten low to his right from straight strike.
Lansdown had a chance to pull the score level but the otherwise excellent Ollie Bolwell was unable to find the net having rounded the keeper. In reality that mattered little as a draw would not have been enough to keep Lansdown in the hunt for promotion.
Although now out of the promotion chase, at least they can console themselves with the fact that in defeat they played well.

So how was your weekend? That is what I will be asked on Monday morning in a horrid Hospital on the south coast.
Fair will be my response, and that is a good reflection on the match.
The gnarled Lions travelled and lost again, but boy it was close, yes Cirencester was the better side and deserved the win, but we finished the game with 8.25 players, Dave White broke down 20 minutes in, then Mike Kim took one hell of a blow to the knee and off he went. the bigger the problem though, the tighter the team gets, weird.
Next weekend we are amputating Will Ganniclift's leg, my hands and Dave Tathum's head, result, one win, tidy
At this point I could regale you with a story of how Lansdown Lions, paid for by www.adultfinder.com, got on, but no, that is not my way, this week it is a quiz with a prize so first one to get all the answers to me wins
1 What year did Lansdown HC start
2 How much was this years annual subscription
3 How many trials did Hercules face
4 How many cards have umpires shown me this year (it is less than Phil expected, clue for those in other teams less than 5)
5 Who is the clubs top scorer (men) this year so far
6 What programme has the big red balls
7 In Atlanta Georgia what is it illegal to do to a giraffe
8 How many rings on the Olympic flag
9 Do I take anything serious on weekends
10 Who starred as the Six Million Dollar Man
11 Did the club make a mistake giving me access to the club website
Email me the answer at my name at aol.com and the prize is yours.
So I am off to have a beer and watch some recorded rugby.
Final thing, man of the match AGAIN (bloody teachers pet this one) Graham stonewall Hill, keeper supreme, nice one sir
Ciao tutti

Lansdown boys U13’s gave a good account of themselves at the monthly tournament today. Whilst results do not fully reflect how well the team played it was great to see how much individuals have improved and are trying skills learnt at training in match play. The first match against Yate/Lansdown saw us have the majority of play with Chris Tarling & Ollie Mosley linking well to set Dan & Sam free up front but we squandered numerous scoring opportunities when shooting instead of passing to create an easier scoring chance. Unfortunately for us we lent Yate Max Ellis & Matt Holdaway who showed exactly how it should be done by setting each other up for 2 goals apiece. When we did finally click we scored with a good passing move finished off by Sam P. We then upped our play against Chelt Leopards with Max Ellis & Chris Tarling working tirelessly in midfield and Chris scoring 2 goals with powerful strikes from open play. Cheltenham scored three goals to take the lead as we let our marking slip and held off from some tackles. However Ollie Mosley saved the game in the last few seconds following up a rebound to score from close range. We continued to perform well beating Marlborough 2 – 1 thanks to Daniel Letherbarrow & Sam Privett working well up front and both scoring . Harry Godwin & Rory Murfitt put in some strong tackles & great clearances and Ben Holdaway was only beaten by a deflected shot. We then dominated Chel t Cougars but found we were up against an inspired keeper with some great shots well saved. However Sam found the way to beat him by winding up from 5 metres out and topping the ball to bobble through the keepers leg. Unfortunately we switched off chasing back and tackling allowing them to equalise on the counter attack. Finally we finished with a 3 – 1 defeat against Chelt Panthers who were very strong and played well. The game was in the balance for a long time thanks to some great saves by Ben Holdaway and a well taken goal by Sam Privett on a quick counter attack. Harry Godwin also put in a great amount of defensive work to keep the scoreline down. We were only beaten by some top drawer team goals where the ball was passed around intricately to score giving Ben no chance.
Best Roll out – Ollie (also best lunch)
Best V drag - Sam
Best Nutmeg- Matt
Best Short Corner Strike – Max
Best Work rate – Dan
Best Save/clearance- Ben Holdaway
Best Strike – Chris
Best Tackle – Rory
Star Player – Harry
Best Vocal Supporters -Steph & Julie
Well done to Ben Holdaway, Max Ellis, Harry Godwin, Ollie Mosley, Dan Letherbarrow, Chris Tarling, Rory Murfitt, Sam Privett & Matt Holdaway.

The story your are about to hear is a sad one, but do not despair and do not mourn this day as this is not how the gallant nine men of Lansdown wish to be remembered, also the movie rights are going to net them a fortune.
Picture the scene Roukes drift 1879 (aka Hereford 2010), hundreds and thousands of Herefords finest warriors lined up sharpening their instruments of war and licking their lips and foreheads with anticipation, sure of the easiest victory in their campaign.
Now normally most teams would fold tents and run to the hills, but not us we had goal that must be defended and we were not about to hand it over easily.
Battle commenced and the hordes attacked, their style uncouth and brutish but they had numbers, numbers and numbers. Wave after wave flowed against the defensive walls but the well drilled Lansdown forces held firm. Corporal Bickell, Sgt Paddock and Private Hyndman manning the wall and doing their best, any rouge attackers that made it through were swiftly snuffed by Captian Sidey, the boss was imperious.
To quell the onslaught the battalion attacked with the Special Forces, Lt Clarke, Private Hicks, Trooper White and the Cpl Bickell(multitasking), sniping and scything, causing all sorts of mischief what a sight, real men in battle dress showing numbers mean little when quality abounds.
The half followed a pattern huge attacks and precision counters, only once did numbers count and they gave us a glancing blow before half time.
Every battle has a lull.
Second half, the Hun regrouped and launched multiple attacks, Captian Sidey showed the way with the best performance the old dog has had in a while but they kept sneaking in pushing us back and wounding us. Many Lansdown troops got injured but showed their colours and fought on, Victoria crosses all round.
Now, just so you know it was not cowardice or a lack of will to fight, but private Hyndman had a few minutes off the pitch, to this day it is still one of those mysteries, but he did come back, some would say about flipping time and he wasn’t missed, me, I say his return broke the spine of their attack, they may have scored a couple more after his return but that is a minor detail.
One moment of glory, Corporal Moule breached their lines with a moment of brilliance just to show them even though they might have won the battle, we were not beaten
At the end the enemies leaders called off their attack, respect has been given, and no more blood shall be spent on this day
The score an irrelevant 7-1

So another week has passed into the annals of history and what have we learnt.
Personally I learnt, only playing the lottery when £113 millions are on the line is folly. A punch in the gentlemens jewellery hurts just the same if a man does it or your precious 1 year old daughter does. Starting an argument between two different religions and egging it on gets you in lots of trouble, as aside note if God does exist I am in serious trouble, finally we get to the most important part of the week- St Valentine’s day.
I am male, I don’t care about some twaddle day that has been expanded to encapsulate all that is wrong with this modern corporate world, why the hell should anyone buy a card (£3), Flowers (min £12 but usually £25), Chocolates (£8 because they have added a heart on the printed packaging, the extra print costs £0.00000000001), meal (£45-70) and finally if you are trying really hard, up to £200 on crappy jewellery.
I am sorry but no!
Men of Lansdown it is time the line is draw in the sand, do not bow to this drivel, fight back, say no more!! Why should we be expected to do this, women do sod all for us, they buy a card (or even more insulting, they make one and expect us to appreciate the effort, just go to a shop) and then moan and fire off a tirade that we don’t care, we must not love them and that their mother was right you are not good enough for them.
Garbage, rubbish, tosh and twaddle. I know most men in this club and your female or male counterparts are damn lucky to have you, they should cherish you, love you and treat you special. Where are our gifts, our dinners out, nights on a promise and crappy waste of money bits of jewellery.
NOWHERE.
Well, the revolution starts here with me brothers, I will take the first step, this brave new land will be called “Stag world” and we will be its masters.
Now if I am not allowed to play next week you know the uprising may have failed and I am grounded
P.S. Lansdown Lightning played and got some sort of result, Lansdown Lasers won 3-2 against the Lansdown Lynch Mob/ ladettes/ Libidos (working on this one) and the mighty Lansdown Lions powered by moonpig.com lost 3-1 to winchcombe

Everything these days are sponsored or in “conjunction with”, Football with Barclays, Skiing with Audi, Ant powered by Dec and Catwalk modelling with vomiting. Even our very own Lansdown Lightning (the male 1st XI, I am re-branding everything, the wife is currently trying to stop me changing her name by deed poll to something not suitable for this website) are sponsored by “Snape construction” and the fine ladies section have a hairdresser helping. So it is time the Lions got in on the sponsorship gravy train.
So welcome to a new dawn, the new era (or false dawn and lawsuit) here follows the weekends match report for…………
The Lansdown Lions powered by Viagra, score off the pitch like they do on it
………………beat that Liverpool, scousers powered by beer, quelle supris mon amis. Anyhoo back to the job in hand, a very important thing happened this weekend and then a less important thing, we won and then we lost, great.
Now I understand you lesser teams play less than 24 games in a season, unlike us who have a mammoth season of 26, we would like to say if you are feeling a little out of shape, low on zest or just plain rubbish get your mojo back by coming down and supporting or playing for the Lions in association with “ooooooooooooooo bodyform, bodyform for youuuuuuuuuu”, white lycra and rollerblades are not essential but that is how we roll, we also do after dinner speaking and I am a fully qualified masseuse, cheap rates for an exemplary service.
Nearly forgot we beat Cheltenham 2-1 and lost 3-2 against Cirencester, plus good to see the lions have by far the best team bond, evident in the pub with the battle of Britain re-enactment going down well and severe amount of abuse being handed around to all and sundry after the Cirencester match, L’Oreal- its because you ask for it, or am I just covetous
Onwards men time to crush another enemy

Another good Sunday for the U11 boys - unbeaten today! Started off with a good 2-1 win over Marlborough with goals from Sam T and Sam P. (ok, they didn't have a keeper for part of the game) with some great team play especially building up to the goals. Then a fantastic game against Wootton-u-Edge throughout the whole team. With some great goalkeeping from Matt, Cameron and Aarnav working hard in the midfield - then some quite excellent interplay between Will, Sam T and Sam H (each scoring a really good goal) to go 3-0 up. We then let them back in again with a couple of goals, but it ended 3-2. Then followed a 0-0 against a second Wootton team - a very tight game with Jeremy and Joe getting in some good tackles, and Matt keeping a clean sheet (with the help of the post). A 0-0 game with Stroud will be glossed over as we were asleep for most of it. We woke up for the last game with a 2-0 win over Airthrie - Sam P with both goals, though Will deserves most of the credit for the second one with a great run into the D, beating the keeper only for Sam to poach it over the line :) (still, good following up SP)
Team: Matt Holdaway, Joe Hughes, Cameron Cox, Jeremy Fox, Aarnav Nair, Will Tucker (1.5), Sam Tilley (2), Sam Privett (3.5)
Star player: Will Tucker (hope your knee has recovered)

Lansdown Ladies 3IX secured another three points on Saturday against local team Shipton Olliffe. Following a great performance the week before which saw the Ladies 3XI beat top of the table Ross-on-Wye, the team went out full of confidence. However Lansdown struggled to gain composure for the first 20 minutes and Shipton pressurised the Lansdown defence, but sweeper and man of the match Hazel Galton put in some great tackles and helped to keep Shipton at bay.
Lansdown soon settled into their game and created some chances from open play in the first half with Emma Sayce, Sara Thompson and Michelle Turner working well in attack. After a few more changes at half time, Lansdown came out strong and continued to break and put Shipton under pressure.
A goal finally came from a superb cross by Sam Hook which Gabby Francis neatly slotted into bottom left corner of the goal! Shipton had chances to score but the defence worked as a unit to stop them from scoring, with keeper Sophie Baldwin also making some crucial saves. At the final whistle the score stood 1-0.
Lansdown Ladies 3XI take on Wotton Under Edge next week away and will be keen to secure some more points!

The Snape Construction Sponsored Lansdown Men's 1st XI continued their winning start to the year. They dominated the early stages of the match. Ben Snape set up two chances in quick succession. The first was squandered by centre midfielder, Ben Nichols, who latched onto the pass but was unable to round the out-rushing keeper. The second was finished in some style by Jon Thompson who volleyed home spectacularly from a tight angle on his reverse stick.
Lansdown soon added another. Some determined work from Paul Vickers saw him steal the ball from a UWIC player and then drill a ball hard into the circle. Ben Nicholls reacted quickly to deflect the ball into the net. After 25 minutes, Lansdown scored a third goal. This time, a fortunate bounce off Andy Buckmeister's stick wrong-footed UWIC's keeper before Buckmeister then finished from close range.
At that point UWIC could have given up but they continued to press forward. Winning a penalty corner, they took full advantage, and scored via a close range deflection that keeper Rich Perry could do nothing about.
In the second half Lansdown sat back and protected their lead. UWIC were able to mount some good attacks, one of which resulted in defender Jon Bickell being sent to the sin bin after a bad takle. For the last 15 minutes Lansdown were forced to defend with 10 players. They kept the opposition out and kept alive their hopes for promotion.

Sunshine at last! Another good set of results resulting from good teamwork. We just tend to let in goals when we get carried away attacking and get caught out on the break!
We started off with a 1-0 win over Cheltenham U10, with Sam T scoring from his usual good positioning at centre forward, and Jeremy getting in some great tackles in defence (as he did in all the games). We were then unlucky to lose 1-0 to a strong Gloucester side, whose keeper denied us on several occasions. A good 1-1 draw against Cheltenham U11 followed, with Matt making several key saves and Sam P equalizing with a powerful shot. Ollie Harper (having stepped up from the U10) did a great marking job. A 1-1 draw against Cirencester was a bit disappointing - despite a lot of possession and a good goal from Sam P, Cirencester equalised in the last minute, despite Matts heroic diving. We saved our best hockey till last, winning 2-0 against a well organised Aithrie team. Joe, Hugo and Ollie controlled the midfield, Aarnav and Christie really got their marking sorted out and made some great tackles. Sam P scored from a top-of-the D shot, and Sam T put in an excellent deflection of Sam Ps cross.
We took advantage of a spare pitch to have a short game against the Lansdown U10. The older team won 3-0 (Jeremy, Sam T and Sam P), but given the age gap (most of the U10 are U9!) I thought the performance of the younger team was very impressive.
We are seeing improvements in the team each time they play - both in individual skills and teamwork. Well done everyone.

The squad was: (GK) - Izzy Montgomery, Defenders - Elisha Privett, Ellie Pearson, Midfielders - Emma Winder, Kiana McDonald, Izzy McGregor, Forwards - Maddie Jenkins, Ellie Lyburn, Liddie McGregor.
Once again the team shone throughout the day showing excellent temperament, team spirit and good humour.
We started off slowly drawing our first two games 0-0 versus Cheltenham and 1-1 (Maddie) versus Cirencester Reds. In both these games we can feel a little unlucky to not to have gone on to win at least one game.
This all changed when we played a young East Glos 2 team which we won 7 (yes SEVEN)-0 (Maddie 5, Kiana 1, Izzy McG 1). East Glos were slow and Lansdown pounced on every opportunity to present wave after wave of attacking play. Maddie revealed her true goal poaching colours and Kiana and Izzy McG short corner routine was excellent.
The girls had to play immediately after and understandably were tired and only managed a 0-0 draw with Cheltenham U10's. In the last game, feeling more fatigued, we were unlucky to lose 0-1 to Gloucester. Once again in both games we were unlucky particularily in the Gloucester game where Kiana and Maddie had a number of fierce strikes saved by a good goalkeeping display.
In writing this report I have mentioned a great deal about our attack, but their strong display was down to a solid midfield and defense.
Izzy M was our brilliant but under utilised keeper who kept her concentration throughout and produce good saves when called upon. Elisha and Ellie P played well at the back. Emma was our, nearly, tireless work horse who, all day, broke down the oppositions' moves to create our attacking opportunities. Liddie was invaluable rotating play with our midfield and attack. Kiana, Izzy McG and Maddie were excellent in providing attacking combinations, as mentioned earlier. And last but by no means least Ellie L showed true attacking menace.
The Girls and I were very grateful for Suzie providing excellent coaching advice, whilst Sally was absent trialling for England U60's!
Well done girls, with so many good performances, it is very difficult to choose a player of the tournament, Izzy McG, Kiana were close, Emma was a strong second but with 6 goals, 5 in one match our player of the tournament goes to Maddie.

The Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown 1st X1 got 2010 off to an excellent start with an away win. With many of the Welsh teams putting in stronger performances at home than they do away, this game was likely to provide a stern test.
Lansdown straight away created chances going forward and Ben Snape was first to score after the Bridgend keeper had gone to ground early. Ben Nicholls got a second soon after, finishing from close range, after Lansdown's movement had torn the home team's defence apart.
In the second half Lansdown continued to play incisive attacking hockey inspite of the torrential rain. Andy Buckmeister made several runs forward and his efforts were rewarded when he scored an impressive reverse stick shot which cleared the keeper before finding the net. Youngster Olly Bolwell played well on the right, his vision and passing much improved. Captain Paul Vickers gave another dogged performance in the middle. The home team made a few strong counter attacks which were successfully repelled. Mention should be made of Lance Worth and Darren Ashenhurst and the rest of the defence whose performances kept a clean sheet. It was Andy Buckmeister again who scored the fourth, with another well taken strike, to give Lansdown a 4-0 victory and keep them in the chase for promotion.

A very good set of results in todays friendly tournament - unbeaten!
We avoided our usual slow start and won our first game against Swindon through a well taken goal by Sam Privett on his U13 debut. A hard fought 1-1 draw followed against Cirencester (Dan Letherbarrow), with great defending from Harry Godwin, Max Ellis and Ben Holdaway. We then stepped up our play against Cheltenham with Dan again finding the target to take the game 1-0. Here it was the midfield of Jamie Harper and Chris Tarling who held it together. Next came a 5-0 win against a young Lydney side, with Dan getting a hat-trick and goals from Max and Jamie. With confidence high we finished off in style with a 3-0 win over the Cirencester 1 team - Sam, Jamie and Chris sharing the honours. There was some great free-flowing attacking play - only the Ciren keeper making some stunning saves to keep the scoreline down.
Very impressed with the teamwork today. With no subs, the whole team worked tirelessly. It was also great to see them using the skills we have been practising in training, especially the roll-outs and v-drags to get past the oponents. Well done to everyone and enjoy the Christmas break!

The Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown 1st X1 continue to sit one point outside of the promotion places, following a comfortable victory over Cheltenham.
The first half was a scrappy affair; Lansdown had the greater amount of possession, but it was Cheltenham who looked more dangerous. Lansdown did however, take the lead after ten minutes when Ben Nichols volleyed a deflected ball into the top corner.
Cheltenham continued to pose a threat on the counter attack and in particular their midfielders looked dangerous when they ran into Lansdown’s circle form deep. They drew level after twenty minutes when a fierce shot beat keeper Rich Perry, clipping his shoulder on its way into the back of the net.
The equaliser was quickly followed by another goal from Cheltenham. Lansdown were caught napping and Cheltenham’s striker was on hand to slot home from close range.
Although Lansdown were still somewhat below par, they put in a much stronger performance in the second half. Ben Snape and Jon Thompson started to enjoy more possession up front and the midfield were able to exert a greater amount of control on the game. Particularly Pete Edwards, who enjoyed a man-of the match performance from the left of Lansdown’s midfield.
Lansdown soon equalised, Ben Nichols again scored, this time bundling in from close range. Seconds later Andy Buckmaster added another for Lansdown. With the chance to score himself, Jon Thompson unselfishly slipped the ball through the legs of the out-rushing goal keeper, and Andy Buckmaster - who was surprised to receive a pass - did well to put the ball between the posts.
The game was finally won, five minutes from the final whistle when Jon Thompson scored a fine individual goal, beating three men in the circle before firing home with a powerful reverse stick shot.

The pride of Lansdown have done it, victory at home, now along winded match report would happen normally but I wasn't there. Sorry lads, drinking again and no it's not becoming a problem as some caring sole pointed out.
Lets just say that heroes were found today and the Cerberus was put to the sword, valour, hard work and a ruthless killer instinct put three blades into the beasts heart.
Excellent, but unfortunately the beast is applying plasters to its wounds and will awaiting the Argonauts this Saturday at its home, so onward Jason, Hercules et al to the gates of hell (otherwise know as Newent school, I promise to be sober and do as I'm told

This was an important game between the 3rd and 4th placed teams in the Severn league. Although the weather made it difficult for the Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown 1st XI, the flat and true pitch allowed the team to play some attractive hockey.
Lansdown's forwards made a couple of early breaks and looked dangerous. The home team took control though for long periods in the game, packing the midfield and keeping possession well. The first goal came somewhat against the run of play when Andy Buckmaster broke wide and then provided an accurate and powerful cross which Jonny Leat did extremely well to steer goalwards.
Wotton controlled much of the second half. Rich Perry, in goal for Lansdown, made some great saves but was unsighted for Wotton's equaliser which was well taken with a reverse stick shot. Lansdown managed to hold out with another impressive defensive display.
Jonny Leat's performance won him the man of the match award in recognition of his hardwork and tireless committment tackling back and running hard throughout the game.

Unable to muster more than a bare eleven, the Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown 1st team, journeyed all the way to Haverfordwest this weekend. The name of the town apparently means 'ford used by fat cows'. This was quite an apt name with a semi-waterlogged pitch which at one point caused the umpires to stop the game to discuss abandonning the match. Thankfully the game continued but unfortunately for much of it, both teams floundered like fat cows.
The game had started promisingly with a beautiful pass from Jon Thompson putting Andy Buckmaster through. With the keeper beaten, it took a desperate goal line clearance to stop the visitors taking an early lead. Lansdown had all of the play and gained short corner after short corner. Pembroke were fortunate that their persistant infringements were not punished with yellow cards. Although hitting the post twice and forcing a dozen or so heroic saves from the Pembroke goalkeeper, Lansdown failed to take advantage of their possession and pressure. Pembroke defended strongly, putting all their players behind the ball.
Rob Mudge captained the team well in Paul Vickers' absence (congratulations on the birth of baby Isla last week). Darren Ashenhurst, Lance Worth and Pete Edwards all had good games, but up front, even with the attrocious weather conditions, the finishing was poor.
At the half-way point in the season though, Lansdown are in 3rd place and still have a good chance of promotion.

An early meet and long drive had Lansdown fired up for this vital league clash. With mixed results this season despite their confident outfield dominance, Lansdown were determined to take full advantage of Bretfortons rural style of play. From the outset Lansdown were the better team and found themselves camping in the Bretforton 23. With the bit between their teeth, Lansdown capitalised on the territorial advantage to win short corner after short corner. Bullinghab struck with accuracy and precision but could not penetrate the Bretforton defence. Lansdown continued with a variety of setpieces from their short corners, Susniks sweeping strike was met by the keeper and Box and Macdonald had several shots cleared off the line. Eventually Richards slotted the ball under the keepers foot from a short corner breakdown for Lansdown to take the lead.
The second half saw Lansdown continue to dominate. Bretforton were getting increasingly frustrated by the slick combinations being played by the Lansdown midfield. Bretforton resorted to a series of strong tackles to attempt to slow down the Lansdown machine but were still unable topenetrate the Lansdown defence. Final score: Bretforton 0 – Loansdown 1.

Tournament Round Up:
It was a wet and windy day at Cheltenham Ladies College for the boys U10 Lansdown Clubs Tournament and considering it was one of the first time some of the boys had played together, they played some great hockey! The Lansdown U10 team were up against it from the start as for 6 matches they played U11 teams and the Lansdown side had a relatively young U10 team; however the boys really held their own!
Lansdown were unfortunate to lose the first game to Airtherie in what was a closely contested match; however Lansdown lost Hugo early on, to an injury to his mouth and were without a spare player for that match so played with one less which the opposition took advantage of.
The U10 team had a good 2-0 win over Cirencester U10s and then had a significant win over the Cheltenham U11 team with Matthew Tilley scoring the goals in both matches. The rain started pouring when the two Lansdown sides played each other and Matthew Holdaway put in some great saves for the U11 team to keep the U10 boys from scoring.
The team went through a series of more difficult games, against some of the older opposition, but lost narrowly on each occasion with our debut keepers putting in some fine saves!
The boys played some great hockey throughout the day with the skills learnt in training really evident throughout the matches. They had back to back games all afternoon and were tiring towards the end of their last match with Marlborough. They were 1-0 down but Tilley eventually had a breakaway run to take the score level.
Well done to: Daniel, Alex, Ollie and Caleb for all having a go in goal for the first time! There were some great performances and great saves. Thanks to all the parents for supporting and thanks to Dinesh for umpiring our matches! Also well done to Hugo who came back on to play, despite getting injured in the first match!
Scores:
Airthrie U11 – Lost, 1-1
Cirencester U10 – Won, 2-0 (Matthew Tilley, 2)

Gloucester U11 – Lost, 2-0
Cheltenham U10 – Lost, 2-0
Cirencester U11 – Lost, 3-0

8 games and no substitutes! The boys worked really hard. We got off to a slow start in the first game, but looked better in the Cirencester game – unfortunately we couldn’t find the target. Then against Cheltenham, everyone started working very well as a team and the two Sam’s found the goal at last! As always, the match against the other Lansdown team was closely contended, with Matt having to make some diving saves to spare their blushes.
After that we started to play some really good hockey. We were unlucky not to beat the other Cheltenham team – the post saved them twice! The result against the second Cirencester team was richly deserved. We were unlucky not to win the Airthrie game – the other umpire blew the whistle just as Sam Privett was about to ping in a shot, thinking that our umpire has already blown (it was the whistle on the other pitch). The last game was closely contested and a very good display of hockey from both teams – great tackling and passing. Joe managed to sprint in and get the ball over the line behind the keeper.
I was very impressed with how well we started to put in the things we have been covering in training – there were some great rollouts and v-drags going on, and after the first couple of games the teamwork was much improved. Well done to everyone.

Tournament Round Up
It had been a long time since the girls played together competitively, with the November tournament being cancelled, however they settled quickly into their first game and were unlucky not to score. EG put our defence under a lot of pressure, which eventually paid off when they scored a well taken goal from close range. Izzy Montgomery was playing in goal for the first time for Lansdown and made some terrific saves to keep the final score to 1-0. The second match was against Cirencester Reds and Lansdown unfortunately lost the match 1-0 again. However, this time the match was much closer and could have gone either way. The rain then came down ready for our match against Cheltenham Cobras. The opposition dominated the game throughout and the Lansdown girls lost their confidence and lost the match 4-0.
However, this losing streak was about to change. Lansdown played Yate next and took control of the game immediately. There was some determined play from all the girls which paid off as they won 3-0 (Maddie 2, Kiana 1). Izzy had a very quiet game in goal and watched from a distance as the game was mainly played at the other end of the pitch. Next Lansdown played Cirencester Blues, this time the game was shared by all players as all 10 girls were rotated on and off the pitch. This did not seem to disturb the excellent play and Lansdown won 1-0 with the goal being scored by Maddie. We then said a big thank you to James Farquhar for umpiring for the day and thought we were on our way home. To our surprise we had a bonus match to play against Cheltenham Cheetahs and although this was back to back with the previous match we were obviously warmed up and went on the attack straight away. Again all girls got to play and did really well coming away with a 2-0 win (Maddie 1, Kiana 1).
The Lansdown girls played extremely well and should be very proud of their results. A special mention must go to Lydia McGregor on her debut appearance for the team, Ellen Symington for her debut appearance on pitch (instead of stopping goals, she was trying to score them and came really close on several occasions) and last, but by no means least, Izzy Montgomery playing in goal for us for the first time and giving a truly fantastic performance throughout the afternoon.
Squad: Maddie Jenkins, Ellie Lyburn, Kiana McDonald, Izzy McGregor, Lydia McGregor, Izzy Montgomery, Ellie Pearson, Elisha Privett, Ellen Symington and Emma Winder.

Lets get things straightened out from the offset, it's not our fault, we tried really hard honest.
The Lansdown Lions are still searching for that elusive win to get our season back on track. We are working hard and playing well, the lackadaisical approach to our games has gone and we formulate careful plans for victory. Unfortunately Wotton under edge had a plan too and it was all based around the idea that we would arrive at their ground with only ten players. Lucky gits, thats what we did.
Now for the game, it will be a brief summary, really brief.
We had two clear shots on goal, one goal and no a single offensive short corner, maybe next time. Goal scorer Angus Young
They had 256 shots on goal, 112 short corners (ok slight exaggeration but they did have 18), 33 forwards, 5 goals and three subs.
We did beat them soundly in one area, we got more cards than them, one green for Luke "psycho" Foster- Turner.
So a team from the top of the table, with a full team and playing at home beat ten lions, so what, we looked better than them, seriously, the yellow tops make our eyes look fabulous.
So to finish:
Man of the match- Graham "Stonewall" Hill (our keeper), he had one hell of a game they should of scored 11 more goals
Champagne moment- the intensive offensive short corner practice before the game, if only we knew
Onward Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Atheist etc soldiers, marching as to war, blah blah blah rescheduled match against Ross on Tuesday night
On a side note, didn't drink last night, so working on excuse why match report is rubbish, currently I am going with- I'm really quite stupid.

Lansdown Ladies 3XI managed to maintain 4th position in the league after a 1-1 draw over Cirencester. Lansdown Ladies 3XI have played the Cirencester team many times over previous seasons so knew they were in for a tough game having lost some of the previous encounters.
Lansdown went out hard from the whistle and created some good attacking play, early in the first half, with some well worked runs from Sara Thompson, Natalie Jones and mother and daughter duo Susie and Gabi Francis, but Cirencester were quick to close down the attacks and their pressure in the D stopped Lansdown from scoring.
However the Lansdown side remained confident and continued to pressurise and Sara Thompson who had earlier shots on goal was finally rewarded with a clean strike on goal to take the lead. Lansdown kept much of the possession in the first half and were unlucky just before half time to have a 2nd goal disallowed.
Both teams came out determined in the second half and Lansdown were keen to extend their league. Lansdown however had a shaky first 20 minutes and Cirencester began to dominate. The defence worked hard to keep a clean sheet and goal keeper Sophie Baldwin made some crucial saves. However, Cirencester’s attacks soon resulted in a short corner and the home side equalised with a great strike from the top of the D.
Lansdown regained composure and started to play some of the fast flowing attacking hockey they played in the first half. The team had many short and long corners but were unable to capitalise from them and the score stood 1-1 at the final whistle. It was another solid performance; however there was some disappointment that the full 3 points were not secured.

Lansdown Ladies 3rd team travelled the short distance to second in the table Badgers with just 11 players. Despite missing some important players and others playing out of or in less preferred positions, Lansdown started well pushing through midfield to create some good pressure in the Badgers 25. However, Badgers managed to score twice in quick succession on the break, their forwards and midfield linking well to move the ball quicker than Lansdown. Still, Lansdown heads didn't go down and pressure was kept on the Badgers defence with a number of short corners being won. Unable to convert from these chances, Lansdown went into the break 2 down.
After some re-arrangement in the midfield at half time, Lansdown kept up the pressure on Badgers, however the tired legs started to show and Badgers had 5 replacements who they used to good effect to keep their forwards fresh and ever changing, which was a problem for the Lansdown defence. A great solo run from Man of the Match, Natalie Jones, resulted in a fantastic goal for her, and Lansdown started to think that the draw wasn't beyond us, particularly as keeper Rebecca Chislett made some superb saves to keep the score line respectable! However, a mix up in defence, and Badgers scored again to put the game beyond us at 3-1. We carried on going forwards, and again had several short corners late on which we failed to convert and this is something that the whole team want to work on in a future training session.
Next week, we travel to Bourton Vale who are just one place above us in the league and hope to get a result there to take us in good form into the Christmas break.

A draw, cannot quite believe it, so close but still so far.
On a bleak, cold evening the Lions of Lansdown stepped out to face Cirencester B, a youthful team will pace and skill, a few things were different from previous matches. 1) We had 13 players, great, 2) It was bloody cold and raining, bad. 3) We had supporters, fantastic. As we had an audience we decided to put on a show of scintillating hockey and mesmerizing skill (as usual)
Act 1- All Capulets and Montagues in position and the umpires, Phil 'Prince Escalus' Sidey and Steve 'Mercutio' Vickery, started the show. Cirencester(Capulets) started strong and fast, attacking in numbers, but like my lottery ticket it ended with nothing. The back four montagues showed strength and guile to see off repeated attacks. This did leave Cirencester stretched so we countered, with Will Carr orchestrating the midfield as always, sending repeated attacks down both flanks with James Locke and Luke Foster-Turner.
All this ebbing and flowing had the crowd enthralled, could they believe their eyes, So the lions had seen enough and decided it was time to score, John 'Dead-eye' Dudbridge this week decided he would skin the keeper, attacking from the flank, he rounded the keeper and tapped home into a open goal, nice. Other stuff happened but I have been drinking again so lets just say the half time whistle went.
Act 2- The curtain raised and the game continued at a frenetic pace, nearly killing Sam 'The Lungs' Bate-Williams with asthma issues, youth of today, in my day a cigarette and pint would sort that out. Any way the show must go on, the capulets then from open play, drove a dagger through our heart, one all. As if a family member had slain we went for revenge.
We surprised Cirencester by attacking, throwing caution to the wind, someone won a short corner. It is difficult to see sometimes from defence, so if you did it well done. Push out, Will 'The Hair, because he worth it' Ganniclift shot, keeper saved, Angus Young picks it up and scores, the crowd go wild, all 3 supporters set off flares, Mexican waves and cheers.
Game has been won.
But alas, no, this play is a tragedy, at a following 16, confusion befalls our ranks and the evil capulets steal the ball and score, we stabbed ourselves in the heart, fortunately they must have taken some poison at the end of the game, as a short corner given on the final whistle could not be scored even with all their clan in the area for it.
Man of the match: Sam Bate- Williams
Champagne Moment: Jon Dudbridge's excellent goal
For any philistines, the rubbish typed above is an accurate recreation of Romeo and Juliet.
So Lions Wotton Under edge Next Sat, should be interesting

In markedly better conditions than last weeks game Lansdown Ladies 2nds headed to Cirencester. The game started with Cirencester making some early breaks forward with Lansdown struggling to contend with the numbers that Cirencester were pushing forward. In the first ten minutes Cirencester scored two very scrappy goals which came from quick breaks from defence. The game began to even out in terms of possession and Lansdown gained a penalty corner. The corner was converted by a straight strike from Rachael Bullingham from the top of the circle. The game remained evenly balanced until Lansdown took the decision to push forward to try and get an equaliser. However this led to gaps opening in defence and Cirencester took advantage of this twice bringing the final score to 4-1.

The Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown 1st X1 will be happy with victory over local rivals Cleevilians but will be less than satisfied with the way in which they played.
Coached by former Lansdown player Stuart Skinner and led capably on the pitch by former Lansdown stalwarts Simon Trower and Dinesh Patel, Cleevilians brought to the match a clever game plan. As a result Lansdown were prevented from playing in their normal style and the game quickly became a scrappy affair.
Lansdown dominated the opening stages of the match but were unable to capitalise on their early pressure; several chances from open play were squandered and a hat full of penalty corners missed. However after fifteen minutes the pressure told. The ball bounced around Cleevilians’ penalty area, and Jon Thompson was a hand to finish from close range.
Lansdown quickly scored a second. This time Andy Buckmaster finished nicely from ten yards out, beating the keeper low to his left. The home-team looked like adding to their advantage before half-time but could not add to their tally, despite some strong running up-front from Jon Thompson, who enjoyed perhaps his best performance of the season so far.
After the break, Lansdown maintained their pressure, but it was Cleevilians who scored next. A speculative pass forward that looked like it was heading over the goal line, took a deflection back off of the goal post and into the path of an on-rushing forward. Whilst the deflection off of the post may have been lucky, there was nothing fortunate about the finish; the centre forward brilliantly struck a reverse stick shot home from a tight angle.
Lansdown continued to squander chances and it was not until fifteen minutes to go that they secured victory when Jon Thompson slipped the ball under the diving keeper and into the back of the net.
The result leaves Lansdown in joint second place with Cardiff and UWIC. A win against struggling Pembroke next week will see them well placed to continue their quest for promotion.
As we are close to the season’s mid-point, here’s an update on our individual goal-scoring tallies. The goals have been spread around the team, with defenders Jon and Darren already finding the net (come on Rob and Lance – you can do it). As you will see, Jon and Andy are leading the charge with 5 each:
1. Jon Thomson (5)
2. Andy Buckmaster (5)
3. Ben Snape (4)
4. Ollie Bolwell (4)
5. Paul Vickers (3)
6. Ben Nichols (3)
7. James Davies (3)
8. Dave Holdaway (3)
9. John Leat (1)
10. Jon Bickell (1)
11. Darren Ashenhurst (1)

Lansdown continued their fine run of form with a convincing win over promotion rivals Hereford. Lansdown began strongly, with the midfield combining well with the forwards to forge a number of early openings. Just 10 minutes had elapsed when Chris Hooper received the ball in space and drove unopposed into the Hereford D, before shooting firmly through the keepers legs to open Lansdown’s account.
They continued to press and soon a short corner led to a second Lansdown goal, with Ian Matthews converting neatly. Despite continuing to press, Lansdown were unable to make their superiority count and they ended the half with just a two goal advantage.
The second half began well and Lansdown were quickly back into their stride. Within a few minutes, Joe Dorgan collected the ball just outside the Hereford D and nipped past a defender before wrong-footing the keeper and knocking the ball in at the near-post. Soon Lansdown had forced another short-corner and Chris Hooper was on hand to flick the ball into an empty net for his 2nd of the game. Regular substitutions kept the team fresh and Hereford had no real answer to Lansdown’s quick movement. With 5 minutes remaining, they forced another short-corner and Ian Matthews swept the ball under a despairing goalkeeper to grab his second goal and complete the route.
With league leaders Ross unable to play due to a flooded pitch, Lansdown take over at the top of the table and now look forward to a first-time visit to mid-table Sherborne next Saturday.

14 of our U9 boys took part in their first 6 a-side competitive (but friendly) hockey tournament of the season on Sunday at Dean Close School against a number of other Gloucestershire clubs. All the boys really enjoyed the afternoon, despite the horrible wet and windy weather. The boys named our teams the Bees (A) and Tigers (B) at the start of the day and here is how they got on:

Colwall started with the ball but soon lost possession to the Lansdown midfield. Lansdown were in good form from the outset, confident from their win last week and swiftly took control of the game through their well established midfield. After only 5 minutes Josie Hilton, the Lansdown Captain floated a perfectly timed ball into the circle for Tash Box to slot past the Colwall keeper. Lansdown, determined to capitalise on their lead earned a series of short corners to keep Colwall under pressure. Kelly Conibere hit a first time shot which flew passed the Colwall defenders to take Lansdown to a 2 goal lead. Soon after this Connibere and Box combined to set Box up for her second goal of the day. By this stage in the game, Lansdown where in fine attacking form and hungry for more goals. After hitting the post and shooting wide of the goal Tash Susnik finally shot on target to bring the half time score to 4 – 0 to the home side.
Lansdown started the second half in fighting spirit, refusing to let the elements dampen their quest for goals. A thrusting attack which began in defence saw Abby Macdonald score on her debut. The midfield charge went on through Hilton who was brought down by the keeper earning a penalty stroke which she calmly slotted past the keeper. There was no stopping Lansdown now and Box took full advantage of their rampant mood to claim her 3rd goal of the game.

The mighty 4th's travelled down to Monmouth to face Ross-on-Wye on a day that could be best described as moist. Upon crossing the border into the land of shepards and dragons, the skies unleashed a torrent of rain that made going tough, we haven't even started the match yet!
We arrived and things did not look good the ladies match on before us was splashing around a pitch that was not draining, wet tops, tick, cold weather, tick.
We got ready and even before the match started, we discuss if it should go ahead, as balls in the warm up were only travelling 5 yards when hit, but stand in captain, Niall "the cat" Hyndman, the umpires and their captain thought we should try. Idiots.
So the first half was tricky rain lashing down both teams were evenly matched, except the midfield were Will "the eel" Carr made a mockery of all trying to stop him. For both teams the only problem was attacking the final third where the water logged pitch stopped the ball dead, making both keepers rushing backs, having to kick out balls that on a normal day would have flown off the pitch. We had a couple of shorts but the lake made it near impossible to do anything with the ball, even hitting an open net for Will Ganniclift proved to much, not his fault though.
The opposition closed the half the strongest with two shorts, the first was saved off the cats' stick and knee and the second, a very scrappy affair, which resulted in their goal, Grahame in goal was unlucky as he had been working well and hard.
Half time, a short break with Nemo and Dory entertaining the masses
The second half started with more water on the pitch and a Ross attacker being tripped, he slid some distance and got a 9.5 from the judges, this lead to the Captains and Umpires having a brief chat and ending the game, best call though not all happy, the following match was cancelled affirming our decision. So a rematch at some point which we will win, if not Will Ganniclift has agreed to shave his head.
Man of the Match- The Eel
Champagne moment- The call off
So Cirencester at home, 5pm is next, so cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war

LHC GIRLS U13 SQUAD TOURNAMENT REPORT – SUNDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2009
What a great day for LHC U13 girls! The squad was organised at the last minute and had not played together before, but you would not have known it from their performance.
The first match of the day was against Chelt U12. The players took a little while to settle and get to know each others play. However, Lansdown were dominant throughout and unfortunate not to score with several shots on goal that just went wide, ending the match 0-0.
Their second opponents of the day were again Cheltenham , but this time the U13 team. Lansdown settled into this game more quickly, passing the ball around with more confidence which ensured that they came away with a 1-0 win this time. The girls then played North Wilts followed by Marlborough winning both matches 4-0 and built on their skills and confidence in each match. The final match of the day was against Gloucester . From the start the opposition put on the pressure and the Lansdown girls were slow to respond. Gloucester scored a goal early in the match and Lansdown instantly responded with several strong attacks. However, Gloucester broke through the Lansdown defence again to score another goal to win the match 2-0.
All the Lansdown players should be very proud of their performance at the tournament - everyone was rotated throughout the day, ensuring that all players had plenty of pitch time but also allowing for different positional combinations to be tried out. A special mention must go to Ellen Symington (U11) who put in a fabulous performance in goal, keeping a clean sheet in the first four games. Also to James Farquhar for umpring the matches. These were fantastic results and have firmly put the Lansdown U13 girls squad on the hockey map! Roll on the next tournament.
The girls rounded off their day with a team photo, proudly holding the ClubsFirst Certificate which the club have just been awarded.
Goalscorers: Sophie Tagg 5, Megan Hooper 4. Coach/Manager: Sally Privett & Paul Williams

LHC BOYS U13 SQUAD TOURNAMENT REPORT – SUNDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2009
v North Wilts Won 1-0 (Jamie Harper)
v Cirencester Lost 1-0
v Cheltenham B Lost 2-1 (Jamie Harper)
v Cheltenham A Lost 3-0
The boys put lots of effort in and played some good team hockey but lacked the killer instinct in front of goal, particularly in the Cirencester match where we had the majority of the play. The Cheltenham A side were very useful with a couple of extremely skilful players. Ben Holdaway made numerous diving saves to thwart them in goal and Rory Murfitt made some great last ditch tackles and well struck clearances to keep the score down. Jamie Harper battled particularly hard in all the matches showing great stamina and scored two well taken goals. Well played to all who took part.
Team: Ben Holdaway, Matt Holdaway, Jamie Harper, Chris Tarling, Rory Murfitt, Ollie Mosley, Harry Godwin, Lewis Allen.

Lansdown started brightly against high-flying opposition Stroud, in very blustery conditions. They competed keenly for the ball and soon had Stroud on the back-foot. With fast, attacking hockey, they continually stretched the Stroud defence and the occasional Stroud counter-attacks were easily dealt with by the efficient Lansdown defence. After quarter of an hour, a probing run down the right flank saw the ball reach Joe Dorgan on the bye-line. He struck a firm pass towards to back post and picked out Chris Walton, who has just come on as a substitute. With his very first touch of the game, Walton swept the ball into the net to give Lansdown a much deserved lead.
On one rare foray into the Lansdown half, Stroud were awarded a short-corner when a Lansdown midfielder made an observation to the umpire. The simple straight strike slipped between the Lansdown keeper’s legs and Stroud were back on level terms. Lansdown responded well and were soon back on the offensive, earning a succession of short-corners of their own. During one of these, the set-piece broke down and a goal-mouth scramble developed. The ball broke to Dave Holdaway who struck the ball into the goal to reinstate Lansdown’s lead as they entered the break.
The second half continued just as the first had, with Lansdown making all the running. They continued to nullify the highly potent Stroud strike-force, whilst giving the Stroud midfield and defence a good workout. However, it was Stroud who struck next, levelling the score again, as a firmly hit though-ball was neatly deflected by the Stroud captain, past the Lansdown keeper.
Lansdown resumed their pressure with renewed vigour and went in search of the winning goal that all their territorial advantage and possession deserved. Eventually the goal came, when Mark Williams made a surging run to the top of the Stroud D. He angled a pass through to Anil Patel, who knocked the ball back across the face of the goal, leaving Joe Dorgan to tap the ball into the net at the far post.
The victory leaves Lansdown clear in second place in the division, just 1 point behind the current leaders.

Watching from the sideline, new coach Matt Fairburn will be very happy, having watched the Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown 1st X1 put in its best performance for several weeks. Lansdown never looked like losing this game, which was played at a greater tempo and against a higher quality opposition than its previous two games.
The first half was an even affair; both defences being stretched by some fluent attacking play. Man-of-the-match Darren Ashenhurst led Lansdown’s defence brilliantly, defending with a calm that spread throughout the back-four. The half didn’t pass without incident though, when Rob Mudge put in a hearty challenge which deflected off his stick and into the path of Cardiff’s centre forward. Only a fine save by debutant, Rich Perry, kept the scores even.
Lansdown had plenty of attacking possession of their own but were unable convert any of their pressure into goals.
Shortly after the break, Lansdown took the lead when a forceful cross from John Bickell, fell into the path of an angled run from Ben Nichols, who swept home from ten yards out. The game continued to be a close affair, characterised by some good defending from both sides and plenty of hard running in Lansdown’s midfield –once again Paul Vicker’s , Lansdown’s captain ledby example.
With fifteen minutes to go, the game was won by some decisive play from Lansdown’s strike force. Ben Snape – the team’s top goal scorer – started a move which saw John Thompson thread a pass through to Andy Buckmaster, who carefully controlled a bouncing pass before reverse slapping the ball into the back of the net.

This was a crucial weekend for Lansdown as they desperately needed to turn their run of bad luck around. The squad has worked hard to gel together and are producing good quality hockey but have been unable to capitalise on their attacking play in their last few games. This was to change as a series of penetrating passes saw them surge into Gloucesters end resulting in a short corner in the first 2 minutes. Bullingham took full advantage of the opportunity, smashing a first time strike past the keeper to give Lansdown a 1 goal lead.
From this point Gloucester were on the run and were unable to disrupt Lansdowns pattern of play. A confident Lansdown team continued to dominate possession and were eventually rewarded with another corner. Lansdown executed another slick routine to provide Bullingham with a second opportunity which she placed perfectly into the other corner of the goal. Unable to respond to Landsowns united approach the visitors found themselves 2 – 0 down at half time.
The second half saw Gloucester increase in confidence as Lansdown used the opportunity to try out their players in different positions. Gloucester pulled back a goal in the last 5 minutes but were unable to offer a real challenge to the Lansdown side.

So the fourth XI this season are having are bit of a hard time, we have not picked up many wins but this only tells one part of the story. The team is a good hard working bunch with talent and a great work ethic, this was personified at the weekend with the match against Gloucester D, yes we lost 3-2 but as with nearly all our games it was really close, and we could of snatched the win ourselves.
We now have a solid core to the team, Jon Dudbridge, Luke Foster-Turner, Will Ganniclift, Adrian Blazey, Big G Reeves, The Hammer Moxom the list goes on, honest players that play for the team not themselves.
As we all know saturday was interesting in the meteorological sense, Lansdown played in their new home strip, scuba gear, starting brightly, the game ebbed like the weather end to end stuff with neither team nudging ahead. Now I could go on to give a full report but a night of heavy drinking has blurred my memory so lets just say it was a great game enjoyed by all we tried hard and came up short but all teams beware we are getting better every week and will start regularly beating teams. One side note well done Angus Young on your first goal for the club, Kudos sir.
Next week will see a proper match report (maybe) but well done all 4th players and thanks for teaching me how to play out field, starting to get better even tricked their attacker this week
On to Ross men

In very cold and wet conditions the Lansdown Vixens showed their true grit and determination in their match against Dursley. With 10 girls playing and only one adult on the pitch they worked well as a team taking the game to Dursley. Some well worked moves saw the reward of the first goal with Claire McGrath tapping the ball into the back of the net. Dursley were rattled as they were yet to be beaten this season and they fought back hard to bring it back to a draw. At the beginning of the second half Lansdown had the majority of play in Dursley’s defensive half, rewarded with a short corner Holly Wright cleanly struck the ball to sink Lansdown’s second goal. Dursley kept pushing but with some amazing saves from Keeper Ben Holdaway were unsuccessful in their attempts. In the last 5 minutes Lansdown gained another short corner and with a great injection from Claire Molliver, Holly Wright slipped the ball left to Claire McGrath who slotted the ball neatly into the goal. A great match with an even better result. Thanks go to all of the team for playing so well, Captian Kim Stevens for organising the team and Negs Luckman (umpiring), Michelle Arms (coaching) and Sara Thompson (playing) for the adult assistance on the day.

Newent set out their stall very early on, with some strong, aggressive challenges contesting possession. However, Lansdown were not intimidated and after the early exchanges, they settled into their game. For much of the first half, Lansdown goalkeeper Alex Pockett was a spectator, as his defence dealt comfortably with the rare attack from Newent. Lansdown dominated play, working the ball well through midfield, but for all their territorial advantage, they created few scoring opportunities. After 20 minutes, some good play by Ian Matthews found Mark Williams free on the Newent 23 yard line and he slid an accurate pass through to Pete Holdaway in the D. Holdaway lost his marker and shot, forcing the keeper to save. The rebound returned to Holdaway, who calmly flicked the ball into the empty net, giving Lansdown the goal that their first-half superiority had deserved. With 5 minutes left in the half, a rare Newent attack found them in the Lansdown D. During a goalmouth melee, a Newent forward unleashed a powerful goal-bound shot though a crowd of players, but somehow Pockett stretched out a hand to make a fine save.
The second half was better contested by Newent and the game became a tight midfield struggle, with neither side able to carve any meaningful openings. Lansdown continued to defend well and even the odd Newent short-corner was dealt with efficiently. Lansdown’s forwards toiled hard, but made no further impression on the Newent goal. The victory maintains Lansdown’s position in the top third of the table, with a tough away fixture at high-flying Stroud to come this weekend.

Needing to make amends for last saturday's disappointment, the Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown 1st XI put in a much improved performance to climb to 2nd position in the league.
Starting strongly, Jon Thompson threaded a fine pass to put Ben Snape through, forcing a save from the keeper. Soon after, Dave Holdaway got the opener deflecting a hit goalward. Captain Paul Vickers scored two first half goals: his first with a deft touch; his second, after running from deep unmarked to place the ball in the corner of the goal. Speedy Jonny Bickell also got himself on the scoresheet with a good follow up to put away a rebound off the keeper's pads.
After the previous week, there was a sense of deja vu going into half time 4-0 up. This time the midfield and defence were far better organised and were able to nullify the threat in open play posed by the former international Neath centre half. He did score Neath's only goal however, slotting a short corner from close range. Lance Worth and Darren Ashenhurst stood out in defence ably supported by Rob Mudge. Ben Snape hustled Neath upfront and scored his third goal in three games. Jon Thompson yet again, unselfishly passed to Ben Nicholls to score, before he himself got on the end of a great cross from youngster Ollie Bolwell.
After the ignominy of being sin binned last week Paul Vickers played a cracking game and showed great control and determination which earnt him the man of the match award. Well done! Mention should also go to striker Sam Maylott and goalkeeper James Bell who both had solid league debuts for the team.

Lansdown started strongly demonstrating great team work and dominating possession for the first 15 minutes. Consistent pressure from Lansdown resulted in a series of short corners. Despite the smooth execution of these attacking set pieces the Hereford goal keeper was able to keep a clean sheet. Hereford took advantage of a quick break to gain a short corner for themselves from which they scored with clean strike. This was soon followed with a second short corner opportunity which took a deflection to leave the half time score at 2 – 0 to Hereford.
Lansdown were quick to respond and ensured that Hereford spent most of the second half defending. Continual pressure led to numerous opportunities for Lansdown both in short corners and open play. Eventually Tash Box pulled off a superb individual effort to make the score 2 – 1. Lansdown maintained their pace to the final whistle but were unable to find the back of the net for a second time. Final score: Lansdown 1 Hereford 2.

Following a pleasing result against Shipton Oliffe, Lansdown ladies 3XI went into what promised to be a difficult game against Wotton-Under-Edge missing several players from the previous weeks win. However a number of younger players stepped in and produced good performances, which bodes well for the rest of the season.
Lansdown started with confidence and made some good progress in midfield, linking well with the forwards and producing some good attacking play. Nicola Beattie once again had a good game in the centre of midfield, providing good cover to defence when needed and also distributing well going forwards. Wotton Under Edge broke quickly on the attack on several occasions, but some good defending by Lansdown kept the score level, until a superb strike from the top of the D at a short corner broke the deadlock and took Wotton ahead. Lansdown continued to pressure the Wotton defence and created many chances to score, but they could not find the target.
A positive half time team talk and some shuffling of positions sent Lansdown out for the second half keen to level the score. Abi Weir produced a number of positive attacks from sweeper, and linked well with Abby MacDonald and Gabby Francis to keep the Wotton defenders on their toes. Their defence held strong and despite a number of near misses and 3 short corners in quick succession, Lansdown were not able to capitalise on their pressure to secure the point. Despite the loss, Lansdown were pleased with how they had played and feel that there is a good base to build on for up and coming matches.
Special thanks go to Harriet Greenstock, who deputised in goal with the assistance of swapped shorts with the opposition! Man of the Match went to Abi Weir.

Despite taking a point from this match, the Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown 1st XI, came away from the game shocked that they had let a seemingly unassailable lead slip. Leading by four goals at half time, and outplaying the Welsh side, Lansdown took their foot off the gas and let Gwent back into the game.
It’s hard to think of a time where the old cliché, “a game of two halves” has been more fitting. In the first half, Lansdown dominated; retained possession well and were clinical in front of goal. The second half was a different story.
Returning from a three week leave of absence, John Thompson returned in powerful form up front, out-muscling the Gwent defenders. He was ably supported by Ben Snape who managed to score for the second week in succession.
Lansdown’s short corners also started to fire. Darren Ashenhurst scoring with a clever reverse sweep and Ollie Bowell flicking home from the top of the circle.
Lansdown approached half time thinking that the match was secure, and perhaps that was the problem. After the break, a sloppy back-pass put Gwent’s centre forward through. The unlucky, Paul Vickers, was left with the difficult decision of making a tackle and facing a stretch in the sin-bin and a penalty corner, or letting the forward have a certain goal.
When he returned from the sin-bin Lansdown had conceded two penalty corners and another from open play. Still, Lansdown continued to dominate. They pressed for another goal when perhaps they should have protected their lead. Caught on the break, Gwent pulled level.
Having dominated this game, Lansdown only have themselves to blame. It’s expected that Lansdown’s new coach Matt Fairburn, who watched the game, will put Lansdown through some extra hard training this week!

As usual, the Vets have a full fixure list and are playing a series of home games up to the Xmas break at Oxstalls every Wednesday night. This season we have embarked on a drive for youth with Anil Patel now playing as the team newbie. Welcome also to Alistair Brown and Hugh Thomson who have both started playing for us this season. We look forward to seeing Mike Sandison back at some point when his knees allow him back on the pitch and JP will no doubt be gracing the team with his presence once he's finished golf tours and golden wedding celebrations. Otherwise it's the same team that has played together for the last few years, slowing down gently together!!
Worcester - lost 4-5 (doesn't count, it was the last summer game)
Warwick - lost 1-4 (well beaten on the day)
Pershore - won 3-2
Newent - won 10-5 (fifteen goal thriller and a strange woman in the pub - ask Nick and Andy....)
Cirencester - won 4-2
Cheltenham College - Drew 2-2 (Tweet gets a double)
Hereford - won 5-4 (just about scored faster than we were managing to concede!)
We're looking forward to a long and successful over 40's cup run, just got to get past ISCA in a couple of weeks time following the resounding victory over Bye.

Missing over half of their regular squad, the Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown travelled to Penarth for a top of the table clash. The first half started well for Lansdown as they dominated the early exchanges. However they were unable to maintain this early momentum and the physical Penarth side soon began to outmuscle the young Lansdown team.
Lansdown defended well against sustained pressure from the Welsh side but just before the break, Alex Pocket, Lansdown’s excellent new keeper was unable to reach a flick which flew across the face of his goal and into the top corner.
Despite some unnecessarily aggressive play from the Penarth side, Lansdown did not back away from the challenge. The captain Vickers, was repeatedly hit from behind – a situation which he clearly relished as he went on to put in some fine tackles of his own.
Penarth’s superior physicality became evident in the final fifteen minutes of the match, where through sheer weight of pressure they managed to score a further two times. The first of which was particularly impressive as their young centre forward evaded three tackles before firing home from ten yards out.
Lansdown did not give up, and their hard work was finally rewarded when Ben Snape rounded the keeper and smashed the ball home from close distance. A special mention should go to Jonny Leat, Lansdown’s youngest player on the day who really got ‘stuck in’ despite being fouled on almost every occasion he touched the ball.

This was a classic ‘Game of Two Halves’! Travelling with the bare 11, Lansdown were expecting a tough battle with the youthful Leominster side. The match started well, with Lansdown exerting good early pressure on the Leominster defence and restricting them to occasional forays into the Lansdown half. So it was somewhat against the run of play when a deep clearance from Leominster was deflected into the path of their centre-forward, who unleashed a powerful shot from a wide angle to open the scoring. Rocked by the goal, Lansdown found themselves under increasing pressure and a few minutes later Leominster converted a short-corner to go 2-0 up.
Lansdown still looked dangerous on the break but were soon under different pressure, when, after a certain penalty stroke claim was denied by the umpire, Mark Williams protested too loudly and spent 5 minutes watching the game from the sideline. The 10 men of Lansdown absorbed the pressure well and as Williams returned to the game, they managed to force a goal through a Joe Dorgan shot from close range. However, the success was short-lived as a few minutes later, Leominster broke quickly and in a flowing move scored again from close range, to leave Lansdown 3-1 down and with a mountain to climb in the second half.
After a firm team-talk and a reshuffle of the Lansdown line-up, they re-took the field with a real sense of purpose. A neatly executed short corner resulted in Ian Matthews scoring to narrow the gap again and concerted pressure from the left flank created another scoring opportunity which Johnny Leat took to open his account and level the scores at 3-3.
Lansdown were really buzzing now and the forwards were working hard to create more chances. Joe Dorgan soon doubled his tally with a superb reverse stick strike low into the left corner, putting Lansdown in front. Leominster seemed to tire, even with their many substitutes and it was Lansdown who scored again, when another good short corner was put away by Ian Matthews to add to his total. Lansdown continued to press hard and a clearance from Mark Williams at the top of his own ‘D’ was picked up by Joe Dorgan on halfway. Williams continued his run as Dorgan drove through a succession of tackles and into the Leominster ‘D’. Dorgan slipped the ball past the onrushing ‘keeper and Williams was on hand to roll the ball over the line for a fine 6-3 victory.

Lansdown vixens faced their toughest game of the season against local rivals Cheltenham. The vixen’s team had enjoyed a run of success, but the match against Cheltenham was a harder contest than those they had previously faced.
Both teams started strongly and Lansdown were able to create some great runs early on, through some excellent teamwork from Sophie Tagg, Claire McGrath and Claire Moliver. Despite these early chances, Lansdown could not find the goal and sent many balls wide. The game was extremely fast paced and in the first half, some great attacking play by Cheltenham saw them take a 2-0 lead at half time.
The Lansdown vixens spent much of the second half in their own D, defending relentless attacks from Cheltenham. During this time defender and man of the match, Lucy Scarrott, stood out from the rest and stopped Cheltenham from breaking through and scoring with some superb defensive play, she even cleared a few off the goal line! The girls continued to fight hard and a quick break from the midfields and forwards saw Holly Wright slot the ball cleanly into Cheltenham’s goal. Cheltenham were however able to score another 4 in the second half. This was partly due to the fact that neither the Lansdown or Cheltenham side were able to field a goal keeper and Lansdown certainly missed the last line of defence on this occasion.
Some great lessons were learnt through the match, with many players new to the vixens set up and the girls remain confident going into next week’s fixture against Cirencester.

Lansdown started strongly with a re-organised midfield dominating possession from the start. The Civil Service midfield struggled to keep up with the pace that was set by the Lansdown team. Lansdown were confident in possession, playing their best hockey of the season and gaining good territorial advantage as a result. Early in the first half Lansdown scored with a crisp strike from a short corner executed by Rachael Bullingham. Lansdown were relentless in attack and continued to win short corners but were unable to capitalise from their set pieces.
Civil Service re-organised their midfield for second half in an attempt to contain the Lansdown attack. Lansdown continued to dominate both territory and possession but could not find the finishing touches needed to increase their lead. After several break away attacks Civil Service were rewarded with their first short corner. A clean strike saw them level the score 10 minutes from the end of time. Final score: Civil Service 1 – Lansdown 1.

The Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown 1st X1 bounced back to winning ways with a convincing victory over UWIC and Cardiff.
After conceding an early goal from a well executed short corner, Lansdown set about their task with a vigour which had escaped them during their previous week’s defeat. With the very next attack, Ollie Bolwell levelled the score with a smart finish from close range.
Lansdown continued strongly. Paul Vickers’ determined play recovered the ball in the centre circle. A smart pass put man of the match, James Davies through. His sharp finish from the top of the circle gave Lansdown the lead.
Although Lansdown enjoyed the majority of possession, on the occasions that UWIC and Cardiff threatened Lansdown’s circle, some fine tackling from the centre back pairing of Lance Worth and Darren Ashenhurst meant that Lansdown enjoyed a goal advantage at half time.
Soon after the break, Dave Holdaway capitalised on a clever slide pass from Davies to increase Lansdown’s lead. However, some careless play from Lansdown gave UWIC and Cardiff an opportunity to get back into the game. A slick short corner resulted in the ball just creeping over the line, despite the best efforts of Alex Pocket, who enjoyed a fine day between the posts on his debut for the First Eleven.
Despite the setback, Lansdown continued strongly. Some slick passing play took advantage of UWIC and Cardiff’s tiring legs. A well worked short corner, deflected home by the diving Paul Vickers, saw Lansdown re-establish a two goal cushion. Shortly before the close, James Davies delivered the icing on the cake when his well struck shot from the top of the circle found the back of the net.

Lansdown Ladies 3 XI continued their strong start to the season with a 1-0 win over Shipton Oliffe.
Lansdown applied pressure on the Shipton defence in the first half with strong runs by Liddy Ellis, Holly Davies and Natalie Jones but were not rewarded with a goal. Man of the Match Nicola Beattie play solidly in midfield distributing the ball out onto both wings and feeding the forwards.
The second half proved to be tense, with Shipton being awarded 3 short corners in a row but the Lansdown defence held strong with some great saves by goal keeper Rebecca Chislett. After some well worked play by Lansdown on a long corner, Sara Thompson received the ball at the top of the D and slotted the ball cleanly into the bottom corner of the goal. Both teams continued to create chances up until the final whistle but Lansdown were able to remain on top.
This was another well fought win for Lansdown who take on Wotton-Under-Edge next weekend at home.

Lansdown fielded an experienced Vixens side who dominated from the outset. Claire McGrath sent an accurate pass into the D for Claire Moliver to slot in from close range. Stroud continued to absorb pressure from Lansdown throughout the first half but managed to avoid conceding further goals despite several attempts from McGrath and Moliver. Stroud eventually worked their way into the Lansdown end but were denied a goal by keeper Rachael Bullingham on her Vixens debut.
In the second half Sophie Tagg and Kim Stevens demonstrated fine stick skills to keep the pressure on Stroud. Good distribution from Molliver resulted in a superb goal by McGrath. McGrath was on form in attack and soon scored again, this time following a pass from Emily Gibbons, bringing the final score to Lansdown 3 – Stroud 0.

More illness and unavailability forced further changes to the Lansdown line-up. For the opening ten minutes of their third league match of the season, Lansdown were on the back foot, defending deep against a strong attacking Cirencester team. Some good counter-attacking play kept the Cirencester defence on their toes, but the opening break came early for Cirencester. A Cirencester through-ball was deflected by a defender and was heading for a long corner before a mis-directed clearance was picked up by a Cirencester attacker just inside the D. A quick shot was initially saved, but the rebound fell to another striker who smashed the ball past the diving Alex Pockett. Rattled by the goal, Lansdown struggled to develop their passing game, but slowly began to settle to the task. With 10 minutes to the interval, Lansdown forced a short corner and Ian Matthews unleashed a powerful shot low into the left corner of the goal, to level the scores.
A much more incisive Lansdown took the field for the second half. From the outset, they moved the ball with more fluidity, distributing neatly from defence to midfield and onto the strong-running forward line. James Mears and Mash Patel worked hard for possession and kept Pete Holdaway and Joe Dorgan supplied with lots of ball. The Cirencester keeper made a string of excellent saves, as Lansdown remained camped in their opposition’s half. Cirencester were restricted to rare counter-attacks that were snuffed out by the strong defending of Tim Postlethwaite and Rob Saunders. Lansdown used the width well, with Paul Williams surging down the right flank and Anil Patel patrolling the left wing. With about ten minutes remaining, Lansdown launched another quick attack, moving the ball in neat triangles past the static defence. The ball was moved wide to Dorgan, who drew the keeper before squaring the ball to James Mears who swept it into an empty goal for the winner. The victory leaves Lansdown A joint top of the Hereford and Gloucester Division 1 at this early stage of the season.

Lansdown left Cardiff feeling that an opportunity had been missed. Despite a strong start, the Cheltenham side failed to fully capitalise upon their early possession. Only, the excellent Andy Buckmaster managed to find the net during the early exchanges, firing home from a tight angle.
The twenty minutes before the break saw UWIC fight back strongly, repeatedly hitting Lansdown on the break. Lansdown’s defence coped admirably for long periods, particularly John Bickell who demonstrated a good eye for a tackle throughout. However, UWIC visibly grew in confidence. Their centre forward in particular enjoyed a purple patch, finding the net twice in a 10 minute spell. The first of which was especially impressive; a powerful strike from the top of the circle, left Lansdown’s keeper helpless.
To make matters worse for Lansdown, UWIC registered with another break-away goal shortly after the break.
Enjoying a two goal advantage, UWIC sat back to protect their lead. The rest of the half was almost one-way traffic. Lansdown’s Johny Leet had the UWIC defence worried with an early effort on goal that whistled over the crossbar.
As time ticked by, Lansdown were again frustrated; five short-corner opportunities were squandered and some slick passing play invariably broke down without troubling UWIC’s circle.
However, Andy Buckmaster took the game by the scruff of the neck, repeatedly making strong runs down the flank. His efforts were finally rewarded, when he latched onto a pass from Lansdown’s skipper, Vickers, to strike the ball beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.
Both teams lost a player to the sin-bin with ten minutes to go, which created more space for Lansdown to exploit. However, despite some frenzied attacking play, most notably from Rob Mudge, UWIC managed to protect their lead.

Lansdown played their first home game of the season to Ross on Wye and started stongly but unfortunately lost the match 0-1.
The first half of the game was evenly fought by both Lansdown and Ross with only one short corner being created in Lansdowns’ favour. At the half time whistle the game stood at 0-0.
The second half saw a similar strong start from Lansdown and saw their second short corner of the match along with Ross’ first. Neither of the short corners resulted in a goal and both teams had all to play for. However with 15 minutes to go Ross broke through Lansdown’s defence and had a shot on target seeing a goal in Ross’ favour.
Lansdown continued to battle, with the midfield and forwards pushing into the Ross half, earning a couple of long corners and free hits within Ross’ 25. Unfortunately Lansdown were not able to break down the Ross defence and the final result stood at 0-1. It was however a closely fought game which Lansdown can take many positives from for the rest of the season. Player of the match went to Defender, Sam Kloos.

Dear Club Member,
For the last couple of months Julie Stowe and I have been pulling together a sponsorship pack which we will be using to attract potential sponsors to the club. It is important for Lansdown to attract sponsors, this is so that we can keep membership and match fees as low as possible. We have already targeted a number of the bigger companies in the area and have received sponsorship from Snape Construction, Endsleigh Insurance Services and GSL Ltd to add to our long time supporters, the Stick Shop and Laura Leigh hairdressing. If you feel that you know of any company who may be interested in sponsoring Lansdown please point them in the direction of the sponsorship page on this website where they will find a copy of the sponsorship pack. A rather damp and drizzly day greeted a Lansdown side keen to pick up their first points of the season. Unfortunately we did not get off to the best of starts as Coach Carolyn was called into umpire our game as the second umpire failed to show.
Lansdown started well dominating possession and creating goal scoring chances. A well worked goal from Kirsty Dunleavy took Lansdown into an early lead inside 15 minutes. The rest of the half remained tight with both teams creating chances. Firebrands eventually scored having had their previous two efforts disallowed.
Lansdown lost their way a little at the start of the second half and conceded two early goals. However in true Lansdown spirit the girls rallied and after a fine shot from Katie Roberts, Nina Emery slotted home the rebound. 15 minutes later a very cool headed Julie Stowe blasted the ball into the roof of the net following the break down of a penalty corner. The team pushed hard for the winner but unfortunately had to be satisfied with a draw.
Lansdown travel to play local rivals Cheltenham next Saturday and they will need to improve on a below par performance at Firebrands.

Lansdown hosted Bridgend for their first home league game of the season. They secured the win but were unlucky not to post a higher score.
Lansdown started strongly with a penetrative run and strike from Jon Thompson that drew a good save from the keeper. It wasn't long before the home team's superioirty was rewarded when a long, accurate pass from James Davies was deftly put away by Ben Snape. A drag flick from Ollie Bolwell then hit the cross bar followed moments later by a shot from Johny Leat which hit the post. Lansdown's second goal eventually came with a good finish at close range from Andy Buckmaster.
In the second half, Bridgend continued to be totally outplayed, but they managed to stay in the game with some dogged defending. They caused Lansdown a bit of a scare late on when they reduced the deficit to 2-1, scoring a goal of their own from a counter attack, and then maintaining pressure with a series of penalty corners. With the return of Lance Worth to the team, and tight defending from Jonny Bickell and Darren Ashenhurst, Lansdown were able to keep Bridgend out. The game was sealed after an intelligent run from Buckmaster who then crossed for Davies to skillfully guide the ball past the keeper for victory.
Captain Paul Vickers was elected man of the match for his hard work in midfield which was instrumental in his team's dominant display.

Lansdown Ladies 3XI started their league campaign well with a convincing 1-0 win over local rivals Cheltenham. A confident Lansdown side started strong from the whistle, creating many runs through midfield and forwards putting Cheltenham under pressure from the start.
New players Holly Davies and Michelle Turner worked well with Sam Hook to create some strong attacks up the left of the pitch and forced Cheltenham to make some mistakes early on. Hannah Milsom and Nic Beattie battled hard in the centre midfield creating further chances with Liddy Ellis and debutant Natalie Jones. Lansdown earned 3 short corners in the first half through forcing Cheltenham to make mistakes. Some great saves from the Cheltenham keeper stopped some great shots on target from Natalie from being scored.
Following a positive half time team talk Lansdown lost concentration early on in the second half and Cheltenham looked threatening with some younger players forcing their way through the Lansdown defence. However some strong defending from all especially sweeper Kate Allan and some great saves from new Goal Keeper Rebecca Chislett kept Cheltenham at bay.
Lansdown refocused and went on the attack again. The forwards secured another short corner and following another great strike from Natalie and a save by the Cheltenham keeper Abi Macdonald was able to follow up on the rebound and slot the ball into the goal. Cheltenham fought until the final whistle but Lansdown were able to keep composure. It was a great team performance with many players making their debut for the new look ladies 3 side. The 3XI next match will be home at Bournside against Ross on Wye.

Lansdown Ladies 2XI made a commanding start to the game by gaining an early lead through a superb individual effort from Ann-Marie Randle. Lansdown grew in strength throughout the first half and were soon 2 – 0 up thanks to a pinpoint cross from captain Josie Hilton which Angela Myerscough was able to slot past the Blockley keeper. Blockley were unable to cope with the sustained pressure from Lansdown who were determined to maintain a fast pace. Lansdown’s set pieces paid off when Ann-Marie Randle struck a powerful goal from a short corner just before half time to bring the score to 3 - 0.
In the second half Lansdown were relentless and scored again through Natasha Box who picked up the ball outside of the 23 before lacing it in the corner of the goal making the score 4 - 0. Blockley staged a brief fight back to 4 – 2. However, Lansdown had the final word as Emma Sayce dived to ensure a 5 – 2 victory to Lansdown.

For their first league game of the 2009/2010 season, Lansdown 1st XI were away to Cheltenham. With a number of former Lansdown players now in the Cheltenham team, and with a fair amount of history shared by members of both sides, this fixture was always going to be more than just a local derby.
Lansdown benefitted greatly from the return of Andy Buckmaster and Pete Edwards to bolster the midfield. The team played some attractive hockey, improving their possession and passing from last week's game. This helped to put Cheltenham under some sustained pressure, bringing with it a handful of penalty corners. Lansdown took the lead with a well executed drag flick from Ollie Bolwell - the ball finding the back of the net after a deflection from one of the defenders. Cheltenham then equalised against the run of play when a quick counter attack ended with a fine finish. Lansdown came back strongly though, Ollie Bolwell scoring a superb goal with a reverse stick strike, just before half time.
Coach Matt Fairburn was on hand to see the benefits of all the hard work put in at training and he gave some positive feedback to his players at the break. Cheltenham battled hard in the second half and drew level, with a well taken goal. Lansdown continued to look dangerous going forward, Jon Leat and Ben Snape making some good runs. The winner came with three quarters of the game gone when captain Paul Vickers made an incisive burst, beating several players, before taking a shot at goal. Striker Jon Thompson anticipated the keeper's save and reacted quickly to the rebound, neatly slotting the ball home to take the lead. Cheltenham created some pressure of their own in the last few minutes but committed defending from Paul Vickers, Rob Mudge, and some sound keeping from Andy Hockley kept the home team out giving Lansdown the win. Bring on Bridgend next Saturday!

So on what seemed an even hotter day than last week, the 4th XI lost, in what resembled the Battle of Thermopylae. Cleevillians started very well in the opening minutes carving through the Lansdown field entering the D and hitting a reverse stick shot that flew into the top of the net, a bad omen for things to come. After gathering ourselves the men girded their loins and locked shields, no more easy shots. It was clear they had the numbers on us in attack but strong work from Mike Kim, Adrian Blazey and Gerrard Baker, repelled wave after wave of attacks.
This gave the troops chance to counter, Nick "King Leonidas" Chittock led by example, making fools of players many years his senior and twice his size, this inspired others, "The Hammer" Moxom distributed like a demon, and we pushed forward. With the half flying by it looked positive until the opposition hordes got a short, which they dispatched hard and low, Adrian Blazey unlucky to not stop, Lucky to keep his hand. Half time whistle soon followed.
Second half saw much of the same, mass attacks from Cleevillians, washing against our defence and Bob Moxom sending out quick counters to awaiting forwards. But eventually the hordes numbers started to count, goals came from free play, but the damage would have been worse if not for Andy "The Cat" Gayler, stopping many a shot and marshalling our stretched forces. We did wound the beast once, a short corner, pushed out, hit in, their keeper saving only to have Mark Davidson pounce and parry home. Small consolation but still felt good.
This may have been a defeat, but we feel much was gained and will stand us in good stead for the future and the return fixture in which we shall return the favour.

The ladies 1stX1 did not enjoy the best build up to their opening encounter of the league season after arriving late, follwing various issues with traffic etc! It took us a while to settle into the game and we were under constant pressure during the opening minutes from a new look Isca side. Some excellent work from the whole squad and some great saves from Amy Llloyd Jones kept Isca at bay until they broke the deadlock in the middle of the first half with a goal in open play. Their second goal came following some brave defending from Lucy Wilkes which unfortunately resulted in a stroke. Lansdown improved throughout the rest of the half and were starting to look like themsleves before the break.
A welcome break and "chat" at half time saw Lansdown show some real grit and determination at the start of the second half with Kirsty Dunleavy scoring a well worked goal. This was soon to be followed up with a great goal from a narrow angle from Hannah Knight.
Lansdown played well throughout the second half despite the consistent pressure applied by Isca. Karen Fynn and Julie Stowe were solid as ever in defence. Isca's third goal followed this spell of pressure and was again scored from the penalty spot following a Lansdown foot on the line. Isca's final goal came from a well taken drag flick.
Overall a solid performance full of character from Lansdown which saw us take the opportunities we created. The girls are all looking forward to building on this performance with 3 points away at Firebrands next weekend!

Lansdown turned up at Stratford Park for their third match against Stroud this summer. Having previously recorded a convincing win and a high scoring draw the team knew they would have to work hard against a good team who would be determined to try and tip the tables before the start of the league season next weekend.
Lansdown could only muster a bare 11 with 4 key players unavailable. Thanks must be given to Sam Maylott who, having played his first match for Lansdown in the 4th XI, agreed to stay on to provide cover in the baking afternoon sunshine. The extra player was definitely required as the heat sapped the energy from even the fittest players on the pitch as the match progressed.
Lansdown begun the game brightly, taking the lessons learnt at training and transferring them well into game situations. A number of good passing moves were generated with the ball being moved well from side to side and up the pitch, however the organised defence of Stroud meant few chances were created in the D Despite all the pressure it was Stroud who broke through first with a superbly deflected goal by their captain Alex Waring just managing to get a stick ahead of the defender.
Lansdown struck back with a short corner that was spectacularly deflected into the roof of the net by Dave Holdaway off the strike of centre forward Jon Thompson and went in at half time reasonably contented with a 1-1 scoreline.
During the second half the heat took its toll on Lansdown’s players resulting in large gaps between attack and defence at the breakdown which Stroud’s players took advantage of through a well marshalled formation despite losing a player to injury and continuing with only ten on the pitch. Stroud’s captain Alex Waring took advantage of the space created by twice running onto long balls and finishing well in the bottom left corner whilst being forced right by Lansdown’s defence.
Notable mentions go to Andy Hockley in goal for some good reaction saves, Ollie Bolwell showing good composure in midfield, Jon Leat for his endless running and intercepted passes and finally Sam Maylott for an assured performance despite having already played a full game. The team as a whole will need to improve their fitness and structure, however, there was a great deal of promise shown and the influence of new coach, Matt Fairburn, is already beginning to pay dividends.

The warm weather and a very bouncy pitch made life difficult for Lansdown, who were slow to settle against Hereford in their first game of the season. Hereford had the better of the early exchanges and deservedly took the lead on 15 minutes. Lansdown began to come into the game more and created a number of good scoring opportunities from open play and also from short corners but some good saves and poor finishing denied them the equalizer they had deserved. With 5 minutes remaining of the half, Hereford doubled their tally with a well taken short corner.
Lansdown started the second half very brightly, moving the ball well and creating several more scoring opportunities. Debutant Bruce Wright won good possession at the top of the ‘D’ and threaded a good pass through the Hereford defenders for Ian Matthews to strike at goal. The keeper saved the shot, but the rebound was pounced on by Dave Holdaway, who forced the ball over the line. Buoyed by their success, Lansdown continued to dominate and Hereford were unable to get the ball out of their own half. The continuous pressure told again, as Wright picked up a loose ball at the top of the D and unleashed a powerful snap shot into the far corner of the Hereford goal, leveling the scores at 2-2. The Hereford goalie made a number of fine saves to prevent Lansdown taking a deserved lead. With Lansdown making all the running, Hereford were limited to rare counter-attacks and with just 5 minutes left, one of those attacks led to a short corner which they converted to give them an undeserved victory. Lansdown were left to rue their missed chances, but the early promise shown by the team augers well for the season to come.

First match of the season for Lansdown C started on what seemed to be the hottest day of the year so far. In the absence of a Captain the team rallied round each other to start brightly, both teams playing fast and fluid hockey, even enjoying experimenting with the new laws for this season. Early signs were good, Stroud’s attacks were washing up against a solid defensive wall and in attack Lansdown showed menace. Sam Maylott and Nick Chittock started to take the opposition apart. The first strike came from the stick of Will Ganniclift, a powerful low strike, leaving the keeper stranded.
At this point it seemed Stroud decided on getting short corner practice, 5 in a very short space of time each well displaced with Mike Kim and Will Carr charging the man with the ball and defusing the situation. Andy Gayler in goal dealt with any attack swiftly and with great composure. Then just before the half time whistle Stroud got lucky, a wayward strike from the top of the D rebounded off the upright and then off the back of our keepers left hand to drop over the line.
After a spirited rally of the troops at half time from the teams “youth policy”, Bob Moxom, we came out fighting only to take a low blow, a scrappy hit across our D lead to 3 shots on goal, the first two, lightning reaction saves from Andy Gayler but the third slipped in.
Lansdown regrouped, shuffled the team to nullify Stroud’s changed formation and hunted out their goal, Sam Maylott at this point started to shine, scything through the opposition and raised everyone game, and two quick goals came from him and Nick Chittock. With tails wagging Lansdown shut out the game with a fourth goal from Bob “The Hammer” Moxom, short corner expert, on the final whistle he left the pitch with their backboard in splinters
Man of the Match- Sam Maylott
Champagne moment- Will Ganniclift turning into the player we all knew he could, bravo young sir.

The vixens started the season well with a solid 5-1 win against Newent, despite the fact that the Lansdown Vixens had no Goal Keeper. There was some great individual skill on display throughout the match with the girls playing some fast flowing attacking hockey.
The first goal came early on, through some great play from the midfield and forwards, which set up Claire McGrath to seal the first goal. Holly Wright then scored from a straight strike on a short corner and Claire Moliver scored soon after from a difficult angle.
The vixens became tired under the hot sun and Newent came back towards the end of the first half but some solid defending from Kim Stevens and Lucy Rogers meant that the Lansdown vixens kept a 3-0 lead into half time.
Lansdown came out strong in the second half and continued to pressurise the Newent defence. They soon extended their lead, from another superb strike from Holly Wright on a short corner. Sophie Tagg soon followed suit and demonstrated some great individual skill and broke through the Newent defence to score the last. It was a well deserved goal with Sophie proving to be a problem to the Newent defence the whole way through the game.
It was a very promising start to the season and some great play by all of the girls. The Vixens next match will be against Sherborne in 2 weeks time.
Goal scorers: Holly Wright 2, Claire Moliver, Claire McGrath, Sophie Tagg

New for the 2009 / 2010 hockey season are the self pass and free hit in the 23 metres area hockey rules that some of us have been getting to grips with over the summer.
The self pass rule allows you play the ball to yourself from a free hit. View the You Tube video to the right which provides a fairly good explanation of the new rule. This means that that game can get restarted after a stoppage much quicker and so the speed of the overall game increases. This provides the attacking team much more advantage as they don't have to wait for their team mates to be in position before play can continue.
The other rule change is that you are no longer allowed to pass the ball directly into the D from a free hit in the 23 metres area. It was felt that that the ball is often played hard, indiscriminately and therefore potentially dangerously into the circle from free hits in the attacking 23 metres area.
Any free hits awarded in the 23m area must be taken out to at least the 5m dotted line around the edge of the D. From there the ball must be moved indirectly before being played into the D.
You can see the new rules being played in the Euro Hockey League website, or search for 'New Hockey Rules' on You Tube.
